I think I am probably one of the only folks to make money on his Viper. I paid $70,700 for it in '98 and I sold it for $72,000 in March of this year.

But that was an isolated case and I lucked out. The ONLY time a Viper would be worth more is first of all a looooong time from now, and second by dumb luck. They made too many of these cars to have them really be worth money. Even if some of them do appreciate, it will highly depend on what model... might be the ACR, or the GT-2, or the blue/white GTS, or the '92 RT/10, or the '97+ RT/10, or the final editions, who's to know?

If your car ever gets rare enough to be worth some money, it won't be for a long time and the mileage probably won't matter so much if it gets that rare, so drive it (and drive it hard)

Mike, is that what your insurance company paid out for your car? In your sig you say that the Viper got close and personal with a bridge or something- who is your insurance carrier, and how did you get such a rediculously high settlement out of them?

SSunburn,

The insurance company bought the car from me and that is what they paid for it. The car was mostly stock mechanically (smooth tubes) but I had a stereo in it, but not that expensive of one.

As for how I got that number, well, I just was polite, I explained what I expected from them, I provided documentation and proof of what I felt was an appropriate value, and I was very very patient (accident happened in September, didn't get paid until March).

As for who they were - to be honest I am reluctant to say. They do not insure any Vipers except mine and I like it that way

They will be insuring my SRT and I am very very happy with them. Although I can tell you they are a local company so if you're not in MA, you can't get 'em anyways. I would advise ANYONE to *very seriously* check out your company. A friend of mine got $59k for his 2000GTS with half the mileage of mine. Insurance is something we take for granted until we need it. A good idea is to talk to bodyshops in your area and ask which companies are reasonable for claims and which ones insist on trying to put the screws to the customer.

Drive it man. A snake will depretiate like any car, just not as fast. Lower miles does not mean better shape... these motors need to be run to keep healthy! I would rather buy a 30K mile clean car than a 6K mile early RT... so many problems with the early gen cars and such.

If I don't drive my car, I go into withdraw! I've driven all sorts of cars over the years, but I have never been truely impressed and in love (for lack of a better term) with any other car. These cars are truely phenomenal.

Unless you bought it used, it is very doubtful you will break even any time in the future. 99% of all cars are depreciating assets. The book is still out on the Viper. I'm doing my darndest to pack at least 8K miles per 6 month season. So far so good. I would never own a car to look at and not drive, especially a Viper!

BTW--Ours is Steel Gray as well
