The way it was expained and showed to me was the tire is remove from the car then the rim. It is then placed on a curved ultra hot piece of steel and heated for 20 minutes from the inside. This fixes the puncture and retains the "Z" rating. 20 minute job, cost $25.00, if you really want the story from the horse's mouth call Caldwell tire 626-795-5171.
Thanks for the info, I have a pair of rears (tires, that is) lying in my garage with lots of tread but with nails (luckily not in the sidewalls though), so this sounds like a good idea, since I was concerned that even if I got them patched, that they'd be risky at certain speeds... Anyone else with insight?
Vulcanizing is just filling the hole with a rubber polymer which is heated up to cause the material to bind to the existing tire compound and makes the polymer elastic.
Thanks for all the info, I'm going to check around my region to see if that's an option.

The way Skip Thomas was talking at ViperDays, I think he gets into a Vulcan "mind-meld" with his tires around the track (wish I got a ride with him to see, but I think Chuck can attest to it)!
