I have a 1997 GTS the hood does not want to stay open you just can't trust it springs are very weak. I think it is the lower hood springs. My question is how hard are they to replace or should I let the dealer do it,I really dont want to leave the car at the dealership. If I do it myself any tips or do's or don'ts thanks for everyones input.

I have a 97 GTS also. I took it to the dealer to get the springs replaced. It kept dropping on my head. I can't remember if it was covered by warranty.

Viper Fever,
It's not a hard job. You will need to take the hood off. With two people it's easy - Four nuts hold it on.[No Pun intended

Lift it off and set it on two saw horses.
Hinge - Three bolts on frame rail and one on top, per side.

GTSTIM,
No! Taking the Hood off is no big deal! Most of the Vipers that come through my shop we take the hoods off. It makes working on the motors a lot easier. Or replacing hood hinges.

Listen to the Wiz....
After struggling for a couple of years and periodically bashing the heck out of your back with the corners of the hood (you know, leaning under the wheel arches, and hitting the sharp hood corner as you stand up?) we finally took Tom Sessions advice when we work on the car for any period of time - take the dang hood off. No alignment. Its bulky, but easy to take off and one with 2 people. If you don't have sawhorses, just set three folded towels on the floor for the front edge, and each of the lower corners.

After standing upright to work on the engine, you'll wonder too why you waited so long to remove the hood..... And your back will thank you.
