General Motors Co's 2013 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 will lead the starting field of the 96th Indianapolis 500 May 27. It's the 23rd time a Chevy has paced the field.
With 638 horsepower, the Corvette ZR1 is the most powerful production car ever to pace the race.
The Corvette has had some struggles in recent years. Corvette sales are up 0.8 percent in 2012, lagging Chevrolet's 3 percent increase.
Sales of the Corvette in 2009 were the worst since 1961, and have fallen since, hitting a new 50-year-low in 2010 to 12,624. Last year, GM sold just 13,164 'Vettes.
GM Chairman and CEO Dan Akerson said in an interview last week that the company is working on a new version of the Corvette.
"We will come out with a new, revamped — I've seen it, it's not been published and it's under wraps, top secret — the latest Corvette that I think will float a lot of people's boats," he told the conservative website Newsmax.
It's the 11th time a Corvette is serving as pace car, a record for an individual car. The 2013 model year will mark the 60th anniversary and the final year of production for the current generation Corvette.
"Corvette embodies pure performance, so the ZR1 is a perfect car to pace the most prestigious auto race in the world," said Jeff Belskus, Indianapolis Motor Speedway Corp. president and chief executive officer.
"This is a truly momentous year for Chevrolet when it comes to performance, with our continued success on and off track, and especially with our return to the IndyCar Series, powering some of the fastest cars on the circuit," said Jim Campbell, GM vice president of Performance Vehicles and Motorsports. "I can't think of a better way to mark the 60th anniversary of Corvette than having it lead the starting field of the Indianapolis 500."

Corvette = yawn.

Will just result in the Corvette becoming even more commonplace than it already is.

When I was a kid that is all I thought of was owning a Corvette after my uncle stopped by with his YELLOW Vette, Yep Then I bought a few of them and got tired of seeing them at every stop light. You know how it is when you buy something then thats all you ever see. Then I fell in love with the Viper and the lack of them, So i did the switch and never looked back. Not saying anything bad about the Vette But they are what they are and everybody has one... My 02 Marc

Well, there will be a ton of Vipers at the IMS tomorrow for Opening Day...and, I'll bet that we steal the show again this year...just like we did last year with only 19 Vipers in our coral !!!

We may take a Corvette or two with us....in case we need to run some errands. :)

Gotta admit the Vette looks nice and I've run with a few on the twisties in our part of the country... they handle really well, but it's not the BITE YOUR ASS, MASSIVE POWER of even the Gen I and II Vipers. The 'only one around' feeling of pulling up in the Viper just can't be beat. There are a lot of Super Cars I'd like to own, but there will ALWAYS be a Snake in the garage just to give me that pure, untamed, wild BEAST that refuses to be tamed. It's kind of like owning a whole pasture full of quarter horses and thorough breds, but you just GOTTA have that one Mustang that was pulled from the Wyoming herd.

Corvette has so much more reach than Viper. Makes total sense.

Since the order book for the 2013 Viper is not open yet and there are very few, if any, finished vehicles available to be a pace car, it makes sense to wait until 2013. However, even if it was available, the primary identity of the Viper is on a road course so perhaps it will be the pace car at the Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona next January. Do Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborguini, Audi R8, and Nissan GTR owners watch the Indy 500 more or less than the Rolex 24? I would guess that SRT and Chrysler would want to use their limited marketing dollars in a manner which most effectively hits the target buying audience.

Just a guess, but I think it is because a Vette is pacing Indy instead of a Viper. Not a big deal IMO. If GM wants to squander 500K parading those cookie cutters around Indy, let them.
I guess your right, and I agree.

My guess is the Vette is pacing the Indy 500 instead of the Viper is that Chevy, Honda, and Lotus are engine suppliers to the series. Or at least announced to be engine suppliers while Chrysler does not participate in Indycar racing.

Would love to see the Viper pace the 24 hours of Lemans this year. That would be cool.

It is posts like these that make me realize what a bunch of immature children most of you are. Posting crap like this bashing the Corvette for 'commonality'; *** - aren't you guys supposedly auto enthusiasts?

I've got news for you; the Viper is seen as a poor-man's Porsche, Ferrari or Lambo, so don't prop yourselves up too much on your 'exclusivity' claim.

I have a modified C6 & went on a Viper ride in NorCal & waxed all of the Vipers on twisty roads; seems the majority of these tools like to cruise around and prop their hoods up every chance they get.

Next time you a Vette like mine blows by you on the street or track, keep telling yourself you are superior based upon 'exclusivity'.

I am seriously looking at the Gen V and also a new GT-R; but it is ignorant posts like these that give me pause.

Well, welcome to the forum, I guess.

Thanks - I just hate to see car 'enthusiasts' bashing on other competitive cars; No doubt the new Viper is likely to (hopefully) be segment leading, but I see this same crap on all the forums. The GT-R guys posting some quarter mile race of a ZR-1 missing a shift then bashing all Vettes to crap. Pure nonsense.

I owned/built two modified C6 Corvettes, a base coupe and a Z06, both ran 10s. Still prefer my Viper, even when it was slower than those two (at the time). Sold the Corvettes.

I suppose that you have never been part of a car club or read internet forums before. Perhaps from another country? Lots of Viper owners have owned Vettes and we enjoyed them. We bought a Viper because we wanted something different. Most of us are male. We are very enthusiastic by the Viper ownership experience. It is very much different than owning a Hyundai Elantra. In this country and many others, males tend to brag about their performance car type, or guns, or horses, or tractor, or lawn mower, to people of like interest, i.e., their "buddies." Most put downs are meant as humor; but, that is often lost on those that have no sense of humor and who are the target of the joke. Many many forms of humor require a person to be involved who is the "butt" of the joke. I can tell that you were personally hurt by my humor. I won't apologize, because in order to make a joke, someone has to be hurt, and I do like humor. I embrace it as part of my life.

^^^^ What they said. I've seen Tony's cars on LS1 tech, nice rides. I've owned 3 C6's with bolt ons that ran fast, but I'm back here now awaiting shipment of another Viper.
It's a Viper thing.
:)

I agree that SRT needs to put the $$ where it counts, there's enough press and pent up demand for the Gen V that advertising could be kept to a minimum for the first year or so.

Money wise and audience I guess you're right it may not be a big deal, I was just hoping for some more exposure. By the way I don't HATE the Vette, we have a GM store and sell them, I'm just the Viper side and want to keep the excitement over the GenV out in front. I never meant this to be a bash session...
