Castrol SRF - accept no substitutes....

At Gingerman my wildly talented but brake happy better half went through 4 sets of brake pads, a set of rotors and was seeing rotor temps of 1400 degrees F.

Did one quickie front caliper "mini-bleed" (probably not necessary, but I was getting al ittle paranoid...) and the Castrol was rock solid all three days.

Expensive but worth it.

WOW 4 sets! even with Henry's brake cooling mod? How long do you have to let the car sit before getting your fingers in there? See ya down in Virginia later this month. Will we be privileged to see the new paint scheme Janni?

Alan,
My car will be there either in all its red white and blue glory or it'll be primer grey....

Rotor temps are way high - but caliper (where the cooling ducts are directed) are staying pretty cool (under 800 degrees F, I think...)

El Diablo,
Get ours from BSR Products - a NASCAR supply store. 1-800-432-2798 Ask for Kool-Aid - he's a great guy and will help you out. Stuff usually ships same day - but they are backed up today (he's just back from vaca) and probably won't ship until tomorrow. They are in Charlotte, NC. Good luck.

Janni, does your better half (I disagree) run stock rotors and calipers? And what kind of pads were they that they weren't able to last longer?

Chuck,
Stock calipers. Started with StopTech 2 piece Aerorotor then on to a new developmental BrakeMan rotor.

Pads were BrakeMan #3s - previously the pad of choice. Have had some experience with PFC 01 compound - and they lasted 2 days at Mid Ohio - but different feel - may try them again as we had a few other things going on that may have led to our feelings about them.

Rotor temps just OBSCENELY high at GingerMan.... Warren, the engineer at BrakeMan was there and is working with us to see if we can solve the pad / rotor issues as Henry's getting them as hot as anyone else - and since we are limited by the Super Stock rules on caliper, rotor diameter, pad surface area, etc.... we're probably worst case scenario. EVERYONE was having brake issues... VIR should be much better from a pad life standpoint - long straights are nice to let the rotors / pads cool off before hammering them again. WIsh you were going to join us...

Motul. I boiled the brakes on the Viper at Kershaw and almost took out a BMW running with me. I was _really_ lucky not to damage the car. I switched to Motul that day and now make a point to change the fluid pretty frequently. (Every weekend in the race car). Even at Kershaw (which is brutal on brakes), I haven't had a single problem.

AP600 is the *ONLY* step short of Castrol SRF. It is widely used by F1, ChampCar, IRL, ALMS entrants using iron/carbon and carbon/carbon brake setups. I use AP600 religiously and attain the same kinds of temps that Henry Cone sees on his car. The only time my fluid boils is *occasionally* in the hot pits checking tire/brake temp & pressures. I swear by it.

Reviving an old thread, hitting every fluid in the car, this is my first brake fluid change.

Is the word still with this Castrol SRF?
Fine for everyday street use?

Anyone help me out here I'd appreciate it......

Castrol SRF is ok for street use as long as you bleed it every 18 months.

If anyone needs Castrol SRF. I have it at $55 per liter. Call me or email to order.

My issue with AP600 is "DO NOT USE AP600 fluid in contact with any type of magnesium components (e.g. gearbox / clutch components) as a chemical reaction is caused resulting in gases being generated. This will then prevent the clutch hydraulics from working efficiently", as stated on their website:

http://www.apracing.com/motorcycle/fluid/data.asp?code=CP3600

Typically you use the same brake and clutch fluid, but apparently should not with AP600, though you might forget, so it seems easier to go with something that works with both. Anyone know whether Motul 600 or Castrol SRF has any such issues?

What about Brakeman dot 5.1 fluid?? I heard it has similar boiling points to Castrol srf and it's only 20 bucks a quart :) That's what I just went with along with the stoptech stage II upgrade, with brakeman pads :)
