Hello, my 97GTS, upon warming up for a few minutes, will settle to an idle about 500RPM. Is this normal? Also, I notice some hesitation at low RPM sometimes when I am pulling out. Does anyone know what this could be? Thanks.

You aren't reading your tach right. Study the marks closely and note their size.

Hmmm, mine always idled around 400-450 rpm and I never seem to have a problem with it. I never stall it and it never stumbles. And I can cruise at 1250rpm in 6th.
I'm pretty sure that 1000 rpm is too high for such a big engine. At 1000 rpm, the car will be very forgiving (in terms of stalling) with bad clutch use but will wear out the clutch faster too. 1000 rpm almost sounds equivalent to an automatic's creep rate rpm.
The hesitation you are describing is due to bad clutch use.

Like Dean said, you need to look at the marks on the tach closely. I think you are reading the 1st mark as 250, when in fact it is 500. 750 is the next small dash, and you are probably running just below that. 700 RPM's is about where mine runs.

Damn, and all these years I was reading it incorrectly.
So I started the car and checked it just now. On that basis, it cold starts at 1000rpm and idles at somewhere around 650 rpm.
Well I live in PA, and when I cold start it, it will stay around 1500-2000 for many seconds. Nevertheless. I'm sure I'm not reading it wrong. Can I go to a place like Advanced Auto or Autozone and they can tell me the real RPM and I can check if my tach needs calbration?
Also, I thought it was hesitating due to bad clutch management but I'm pretty positive it's not me. Maybe I should turn my idling up to around 700 or so and see what that does.
I am very careful with the clutch though, It's winter here and the roads have no grip and if I let it out too fast and gas it just a little, I can easily spin the tires. Thanks.

If your idle is that high, the IAC (idle air controller) pintle may have some gunk on it that makes it stick. Start by removing the bent hose that goes from the airbox to the right side attachment behind the butterfly. Squirt some carb/fuel injector cleaner spray in there and see if it helps. The dealer can run an IAC stepper test to see if it is functioning properly. It is HIGHLY UNLIKELY that you need your idle speed reprogrammed. I think the cars are set to idle around 725rpm.

I idle at just below 800 RPMs.
If you put on a scan tool you will see that the car has an idle range of 650-750, as stated previously that second dash is 750. The first 150 seconds (cold start) the car is not in closed loop and the idle is preprogrammed into the PCM.
