I have always been using super unleaded. A friend of mine says i'm wasting $$$ & that i should just fill it with 87.

I will continue using 92 or 93 regardless, but would 87 hurt the engine?

In an article in "USA Today", which appeared last Fall, the issue of gasoline octane rating was addressed. The chief engineer at Volvo was quoted as saying that most automobiles, even those whose manufacturers recommend premium grade fuel, can perform well with 87 octane gasoline. He stated that the only reason to purchase a higher octane was if detonation was noted.

On one occasion, I was forced to use 87 octane and noted no obvious loss of performance nor detonation.

However, as a disclaimer, I must say that I continue to routinely buy 93 octane.

93 octane for regular Vipering and 94 octane for track events with the appropriate VEC2 card, of course.

My gas cap cover has a big label that CAUTIONS: "Use premium unleaded ONLY".

I've always used premium / 93 octane minimum in any performance car !!

93 octane or better. always good to use good fuel. NOt so much the octane, but the gas.

Our high compression engines need the higher octane. You ARE wasting money by using premium in a car that doesn't require it. I use 93, and 114 when I'm using the nitrous.

Higher octane fuel will be beneficial in any car. The higher octane fuels have additional additives that help the engine burn the fuel more efficiently and 'clean' the engine(87 vs. 92/3). Lots of studies. Basically the last one done locally, the woman used only 87 octane, vs. a user of 92/3. The 87 octane had a higher build up of deposit, resulting in higher maintenance costs, also lower fuel economy, etc.. The 92/3 had cleaner injectors/manifold, got better gas mileage, etc.. Of course the Amoco on Beach by the S/S overpass carries 100 octane. :D

My Gen 1 car pinged very bad at WOT with 91 octane but not with 93 octane. I only use 93 now unless not available. Some times I have to drive 20 miles to get 93 as it is not always available where I live.

Mobil 93.Doesn't sunoco use 10% alcohol in their gas.Our dodge ram 5.9 and durango 4.7 are supposed to run on 87.On 87 they do some pinging so we use 89 in them. They run noticibly better on 89.Too bad dodge doesn't use knock sensors to optimise timing in their vehicles. Bruce

on our 4 cylinder race engines(porsche) 10.7 comp showed no increase of power on the dyno with race gas vs 93 ammoco but a 15 degree lower exhaust temps, & the head & valves looks like it is brand new.So i still used the good stuff.
Butttttttttt on our the new Sunbelt built spec miata motor, when we were in for dyno tuning they yelled @ me for using 105, they said it was costing me 3 hp( on a small motor like that 3 hp is worth about 1k$!) they mixed it down with 93 , & said I was to use no more than 100 octane, who knew?
