Whats the mileage?

Looks for the usual. Dark brake fluid and yellowy letters on calipers means heavy brake useage.

Coolant color ok?

How does the clutch feel? Grabby? Slipping?

Are any shocks leaking?

when you close the doors, does it try to step up to close, or does it just click shut? These cars are bad for door sag.

Whats the oil color? Does the owner have maintainance records?

Is there any mods to the car? Those could be good or bad depending on what they are.

How do the tires look? Worn down rears may be an indication of hard miles. Rubber on bottom of the quarters?

How does the tranny feel? Smooth or hard to get into gears (specifically 1 and 2)?

Check the underside of the chin. Scratches are normal, chunks missing are not. Might be a sign of lack of care from the previous owner.

Last, see if a VCA member is willing to go with you to inspect it. Nothing beats experience when looking a car over. Might I also suggest contacting the chapter president of that region? He may know the car and its stories.

Thanks.
What I am hoping for is a list of things to look out for that are specific to the 2000 GTS models?
I know that the 999 recall needs to be checked if it was done properly.
Any other year model specific things to look out for?

If I recall correctly, some early 2000 cars had sleeveless blocks. Some owners could not get them broken in properly and had heavy oil use issues. I believe that most of those cars probably had the engines swapped. I also believe these (sleeveless block) cars made more power at the wheels than any other Gen II. Bill Pemberton was a great source of info. on this matter when I purchased my car years ago.

I've owned two 2000 ACR's and can't think of any specific issues other than above. What matters most is how the car was cared for.

Love my 2000 GTS, but the one thing I did not like about it was the brakes, Way too much bias on the front calipers, stamp on the brakes hard and the fronts just lock up :( Toms 40mm rear caliper brake upgrade sorts this out, I got hold of a replacement pair from another UK VCA member much better :)

Found this link for the recalls Used 2000 Dodge Viper Recalls - 2000 Dodge Viper Recall Reports - Motor Trend Magazine And check that child seat :rolaugh:

You can also check out the actual build date by checking the drivers door sticker, see here :)
International Viper Registry

If the car still has old Pilot sport tires fitted you need to be thinking about changing them too, they may show good tread but the rubber will be old and hard giving you very poor grip, not good ;)

Only problem I had on mine after a couple of years ownership was the front cover timing gasket, my cars just around the 56k mileage :) If your practical its not too hard to do, worst part of the job for me was trying to work out how to disconncct some of the electrical connectors :D

I've had mine about 6 months, it didn't even have 8k miles on it (tires looked brand new) BUT, it was like driving on ice(I was told if there 4-5 years old they get hard), get you some new tires. My brakes have been squealing a good bit (this seems to be pretty common on stock pads, I think) & I tried what JonB mentioned & they still squeal. Dolph had told me he got the EBC green pads, so that will be my next mod I guess. I won't be doing any tracking so the creampuff year 2000 didn't matter (that is the Only year they made the steel gray, so I was limited anyway) & I know the cam is milder, but whats the difference, maybe 5-10 mph faster. And if the cam is milder it seems to me like it would be more dependable on a DD basis. I didn't even look at anything newer than the 02' models because of the vette look (to me). BUT, after only 6 months on here, you see alot of 03's & newer that look awesome & my outlook on that has completely gone out the door. I've actually been looking at some of the newer models. But I don't see me ever gettin rid of my Creampuff! Good Luck, there's also a great bunch of guys & gals on here with a world of knowledge on Vipers. IMO

The sleeved engine is the gen one, which was part of the problem with the gen ones head gaskets.I love my 2000 gts, and run great!
