What year did the rear hatch / trunk releases start?

I'm thinking of stocking some high quality floor mats and am not sure which years they'll fit.

I got tired of the stock ones folding under the pedals and they were getting worn, so I found some nice replacements.

Not sure what year the release started, but I saw a post not too long ago that someone recommended unscrewing the release (2 phillips screws), placing the mat under and re-attaching the release. This also helps keep the mat from sliding. Just finished doing just that this morning...took 5 minutes. I know that doesn't answer the question, but the mats could be used in cars even with the release.

First year of the rear hatch release was indeed 1999. Yes, you will need to route the carpet around the handle.

Fantastic idea to offer a set of good floor mats. I've removed the driver side mat on all my snakes, they've become a nuisance just like you said.

Hi Sean, Call Maurice Liang, he can provide you with great mats that have a notch out for the hatch release 1999-2002. He can provide various logo's for ACR's GT-2's, color coded to match the car, etc. his ph# 650-948-6676. His mats are thick and fit well, no sliding.
