David,

I think if you got the Purner 19" wheels and had the center anodized or painted black or yellow, it would look real sweet. I plan on doing that on my silver.

You can not get a chrome lip on HRE's. The lips are always polished, unfortunately.

If your looking to save some bucks, I have a great set of 18' Purners that I just had lightened and black anodized (for a buyer). Unfortunately, the buyer for the wheels decided to go a different route. The rims have not been used since I got the centers back from John Purner, therefore, the centers are like-new. Pilots mounted with a lot of tread left. 1 front tire is brand new, the other is 90%. National Tire and Battery damaged the tire when mounting these rims, therefore they bought me a new one. The rears are 50%, give or take. ARP chrome/stainless bolts all the way around. The outer rings are polished, not chrome. The outer rings do have extremely minor etching (from brake dust). This is only noticeable from a few inches away, and could be polished out if it bothered you. If you really wanted chrome, it would be easy enough to do, though. It is a 3-piece rim, so the rings are a separate piece. I'm guessing it would be cheap to chrome them, but you would have to take apart the rim (not hard, takes about 1/2 per wheel). Here is a pic of the front rims, and a yellow Vette (sorry) with these same style rims mounted. These rims are extremely light. Anyone who's interested email at [email protected]. I'm thinking (email for price) is very fair, and plan to post in the classifieds soon.

Yes you can get chrome lips on HRE's, I've got them. So does REDGTS and many other viper owners. Call JonB he can get them for ya. If I knew how to post pics. I would show you mine.

Thanks 2manytoys

I love the wheels you have are the 18's in the 547R's?

David
Mine are 18" 547's in their standard wheel in full chrome. They didn't offer the R series when I ordered mine. I've seen both in person and like both styles.

David, i think the stock wheels look the best on the newer cars. The 98 looks dated but the 99 and newer look really good.

In my opinion, the ULTIMATE compliment to any Viper is the new 19" Purner wheels. (dual 5-spoke polished... similar to HRE 547R's)

In my opinion:

HRE:
547- Simply look too small... even in big sizes, lip thickness makes wheels look smaller than they are, expensive

547R- Look EXCELLENT, BUT... Expensive as hell, and the weakest wheel that HRE manufactures

Purner- EXCELLENT look of 547R series, cheaper, stronger.

In my opinion, you cant go wrong with 547R's or Purners. However, they recommend not even going near a racetrack on slicks/hoosiers/ET Streets/etc with the 547 series of wheels. Also, dont forget, the BIG reason that HRE wheels are so freaking expensive is that they are true 3 peice wheels... if that matters to you, OK. (even though I dont know why it would) If it doesnt, your really paying for something that doesnt matter. The quality of Purner wheels (as I'm sure you know) is phenomenal.

PS- I am not brand biased by any means, I was faced with the same decision you are making, and those are the conclusions I reached. (I havent even bought the wheels yet...lol. next spring) Go figure, it was on the same three wheels too. haha.

Do the Purners come in full chrome? Anyone know what the cost difference is? They look great. The ones in the picture don't appear to have chrome lips. If they don't they would be a bear to keep up. I like all three.

David
It truly would be a toss up of which I would buy if I did again. I would lean towards the R's only because I have already had two sets of 547's standard series. So the change would be nice I guess. Bottom line HRE's are like fine jewelry you can't go wrong with them. Besides the build quality is excellent.

2MANYTOYS- Honestly not sure on chrome question.

However, I would like to add one more thing:

With the HRE's, if you purchase them in chrome, they will NOT warranty the finish. they recomend not chroming the 547 series because they are not strong enough to prevent POSSIBLE wheel "flexing" which COULD crack/chip the chrome.

David, I agree with Final GTS. I suggest you call John Purner and listen to what he has to say about how his wheels are made and all the different ways he has tested them. They are very strong wheels and will last a very long time.

I was very impressed with John's knowledge of wheel building in regards to where they need to be strong, and how he builds them so they resist fatigue/etc.....

If you just want a show wheel that should be fine if you want to get into it and you do not mind spending an unnecessary $2,000.00+, go for the HRE wheels.

BUT if you want a wheel that is every bit as beautiful,(if not more IMO), that is way stronger AND more than $2,000.00 cheaper, the Purner wheel is the only way to go for the 19" wheels. I wish he made them in 18"!

P.S. Did you guys know Purner makes custom wheels for salt flat cars? If he is qualified to make wheels for 300+ MPH cars, I know who I want to make my future high speed run/salt flat wheels! :headbang:

Your car looks sick !!!

I might be taking in a Bumble Bee on trade. Could be the winter project car. Will definitely go with Black centers after looking at yours. Had Black centers on my last 2 GTS's.
