Just for comparison.
What other car would you get if you couldn't have your viper?
What cars come close to or exceed the performance of the mighty Viper?
Keep in mind that the price must be in the same range. =/- $20 k

Thanks

I am sure that all of us went through some soul searching before making the Viper purchase. Then, as today, my only other consideration would be a Superformance Cobra, 514 stroker. Very fun car and a total quality toy. I would still take that before I were to add another Viper.

Within 20K? That leaves Ferrari out. I suppose one of those Cobra kit cars would be cool.

If it weren't for the Viper I'd probably be racing stock cars every Saturday night.

New - very little. I agree with the 2003 E55 post above for straight line performance anyway.

Used or kits:
newer 911 turbo
Well done Cobra kits
Well done Ultima GTR kits

Modified:
Lots of things (virtually anything if you through enough time and money at it)
Easiest to mod to get there though would be Z06, or 2003 Mustang Cobra

Man I have them all, viper, z06 , real cobra's that run 10's , 355's and 360's. The cobra is awesome but is one dimensional hot weather car only plus a couple other drawbacks, ferrari's way too much money, but my Z06 that is the total package almost as fast as a viper and much more refined car, granted it doesn't look quite as good as a viper but the price is a lot less for a car that is very close or better on the track depending who is driveing. When my 2003 srt gets here I will tell you what I think about the comparison of those.I said my Z06 was close, what I meant was stock it was close, but it has a Heffner head and cam package on it now and I recently ran a 11.6 at 121 on the factory tires and will go deep in the 11's with tires and still idles like a stocker, so for around 4500 installed for the mods and a total cost of 52k my Z06 is a lot of car for the money!

Latest 911 Turbo, 360 Modena or maybe the Enzo, Maclaren F1, Ford GT-40, Saleen S7, Lotus Esprit V8 turbo, etc. If rice were possible (which it isn't) the NSX and probably even a Supra would be on the list.

A few are "money no object toys" but these are what comes to mind. Financial reality would probably put me in a 911 Turbo which I would mod to yield at least equivalent performance to the Viper.

Viper wins, but Shelby Series I & II.

It's close to $20k difference from the '03, actually might be cheaper compared to what they are going for now!

Hey Norm, I love all your posts and all of your cars as well! But I think that the Heffner Supercharged cars will give the Lingenfelter cars that do not have auto trannies and all that cool rear end and drag race setup on them a run for their money any day of the week. Hell, my car should end up with around 900 RWHP, should run around 150 MPH in the 1/4,(Not as fast of an ET as the LPE TT auto drag cars), will be capable of 240+ MPH on the top end(assuming it stays on the ground), will go like heck on a road course and will be a beast on the street! I think Heffner's quality workmanship, attention to detail, and standing behind his product combined with how fast his cars go at the track along with his competitive pricing and quick turnaround would qualify as a comparable alternative to LPE.

If the question is +/- $20k, new cars, then the only car in that class would be the ZO6. If the question is not new cars only, then the answer would probably still be a new ZO6 with $30k of mods on the engine and suspension.
I'm a Viper guy but I'm not afraid to say that the ZO6 is a very fast car at a very low price. It will never get the attention that a Viper will get but for fast/dollars, it can't be beat. Nothing is even close.
The new Viper price would be about $85k? Well, let's say a 2002 for $65k. At that price you could spend $30k on mods for your new, $55k ZO6 and stay within the questions price limits. For $30k worth of mods you could have a very formidable ZO6. Remember, mods for ZO6 are not nearly as expensive as the more exotic cars.
As for the Cobra kit cars, are they really anything more than dangerous hot rods? I like the way they look but are they really high performance cars? Are they designed for show or go?
As for Ferrari, can you really buy one for the kind of money we are talking about? Will it keep running if you drive it like you drive your Viper? Will it cost $30k for a transmission?
As for Porsche, I think any of them that would be fast would be out of the price range. They won't draw a crowd unless you are at a Porsche club picnic.

The Z06 bang for the buck is losing ground in todays market. Pick up a good used Gen 2 Viper for $47K, put in $13K worth of Roe supercharger, exhaust and rocker arms and you have a 600-700HP Viper for not much more than the cost of a new Z06.

I'll through a vote in for the '03 Cobra. With an underrated 390 horsepower, these cars with average drivers do high 12's/low 13 1/4 mile. Several owners switch out the stock pulley for the Lightning pulley and add 30 to 50 rwhp. SVT says the stock exhaust is holding up 20 horses or so. For 35K and a few grand in upgrades '03 Cobras are running high 11's/low 12's. I couldnt wait any longer for my chance at my dream car so my goal is to get this one to run as best I can with the "Big" snakes.

Not trying to pirate the thread, but I watched a new cobra run on the day I was at the track, and was left pretty unimpressed. It ran about the same as the Lightning pickup truck + a few MPH.

If there were no Viper, I would definitely be in one of (in no particular order):

Hate to jump in here, but you Cobra lovers, especially the Ohio guys just have to come to London, (Ohio) June 22/23. Very possible that there will be 500....yes 500 Cobras here this year!

We've already filled three hotels for this upcoming event. Three days of Police escorted cruises, hi-speed runs at a private lake, (1.1 mile course), autocrossing, where we will be allowing the public to go for rides for a small donation of $20.00. A huge private party Friday night, and on and on.

The entire event is to raise money for a little girl named Jenny and Cystic Fibrosis. We'd love to have you here. You can read about last years "Fling" at www.cobras.com

SAI was well represented last year as well as almost all kit manufactureres.

DV...Oh, did I tell you that we will be raffeling off a "KIRKHAM FIA Aluminum turnkey Cobra?
