Please post some 1/4 mile track times for your Gen 3:
Looking to compare stock and modded cars without power adders. :2tu:

Re: Who\'s faster Gen2 or 3?

In my observations, at Viper Drag events such as VOI's, Zone Rendezvous and Club days at the strip, the SRT's usually take the trophys for stock classes.

For modified classes the Gen II's usually take the trophys.

It is a little more of a challenge to set up drag radials or slicks for SRT's. The older cars are more developed as far as chassis and suspension.

Good driver Gen2's are consistantly running 11.9-12.0 stock tire/Full exhaust.Where are the 3's with the same?

Re: Who\'s faster Gen2 or 3?

the problem is that gen 3 cars always get booted off the track due to nhra rules (13.50 et class) I myself have tried to race and was kicked off with 906 rwtq waiting to explode on the runway.

oh well so I have to keep racing motorcycles just to keep busy.

I think the Gen III's are more difficult to launch due to the run flats and shift due to optimal shift points very close to fuel shut-off. But when I have witnessed is most Gen II's running 12.2 - 12.5 and Gen III's 12.0 - 12.3. The mph is up by around 3 as well.

That said you cannot directly compare track times from track to track. I have never seen a sub 12.0 stock Gen II. Maybe at other tracks but not here. In fact Gen II guys with head and cam upgrades were just at the 12.0 mark or slightly under.

I saw a stock 96 GTS run an 11.96, 11.98, ans 12.1 @ byron 2 yrs ago. MPH were all in the 118 range. There was a blk 99 GTS there running 12.0's all day long with a borla and not sure what else. FYI I have not seen an SRT run yet, but would assume stock for stock they have to be faster.

Club raced my R1 for a year at Willowspring and Fontana. There is nothing out there that compares to track racing a liter bike :2tu:

I would say...Gen 1 1/2. 96 R/T10s are the best because of the low end torque.

Re: Who\'s faster Gen2 or 3?

In my stock Gen III, I've run 13.28 @ 111.75mph (at Bandimere Speedway @ 6000 feet above sea level.) I could consistently run around 13.35 and consistently trap at a bit over 111mph.
The guys I know with stock Gen II GTS coupes have low e.t's of around 13.4, and trap at 110mph.
The Gen III has a bit more power and a little less weight. However, the Gen II has better gearing and better tires, so the real world differences between the cars is minimal. So, In my experience, the GTS may be a tiny bit slower, but not enough to make much difference. On any given race, reaction time and skill will likely play a bigger role than differences between the two cars.

One place where I know the Gen II cars to be faster is in the standing mile. Here, the wacky Gen III overdrive 5th gear bogs the car immensely, just as you are in the "home stretch." My stock Gen III was toasted consistently by GTS coupes in the mile because you just don't have much "pull" when you shift into 5th.

On a road course, I believe the Gen III to be a bit faster. This is from conversations with my driving instructor, who has a fair amount of seat time in Gen II coupes and who has driven my car quite a bit. He was able to put down consistently faster lap times in my Gen III than he did driving Gen II's. Again, however, differences in driver skill is going to make a bigger difference than differences with cars on a road course.

And rest assured, many of them are. The challenge is that the SRT's have taller rear tires and that same 3.07 rear end ratio. As a result, there are more than a few "ties" running stock-to-stock, at least in the first 1/8 mile. And several wins to the "classics" side as well. Throw in a little experience and some very effective lower cost mods, and the Gen II (and often Gen I) is one car I don't want to race. And don't get TOO cocky regardless, or you will see more signs like this:

Re: Who\'s faster Gen2 or 3?

Ran against many Gen I's and Gen II's with my SRT-10 when it was stock. Own an 04 SRT-10 and an 01 GTS ARC. Stock vs. stock the SRT-10 is faster at the drags, faster in the 1/2 mile, 1 mile and on the road course.

With my current mods on the SRT-10, it's not a good comparsion (760 rwhp). But the GTS is soon to get heads, cam, headers, exhaust / tuning and perhaps gears. One of my Viper friends - GTS - with heads / cam / exhaust consistently runs 11.2's with slicks / skinnies. Gen II's can be made to run very, very well.

I just got the rear end Quaifed in the SRT-10 and look forward to 10s at the drags in June - without breaking the diff.

It's a bit expensive to run an SRT-10 at the drags. Had to add a roll bar and hard top, fire extenguisher, 6 points, drag radials and wheels just to play. Also just won the Silver State 1/2 mile drags with the SRT-10.

Driver skill and traction seem to be the biggest factors.

It's all fun.
