would this exhaust mod work on a 96 GTS?

What about adding used stock headers from a newer Viper on my 96 GTS.

A inexpensive way to add power without going aftermarket?

I wonder if this would be a bolt on application or would modifications be required to remaining exhaust?

Thanks.

We've done this - changed the cast iron exhaust manifolds to the shorty headers from a 1998 and newer Viper. Power gains were probably negligible, but saved 25 lbs. off the front end of the car.

The flange that mates to the flex pipe is different, you will need a new flex pipe and connecting hardware (spring clamp) and then you'll need to weld the new flex pipe into your cats. NOT drop in replacement.

Hey Toby, all sorts of issues from heat shielding not transferrring over to a different style mounting flange to the next "piece" of exhaust which includes the flex section and cat. Toss in different length header bolts for good measure......

If your going to the trouble of swapping out headers, dump the OEM cats at the same time with some high flows.

Shoot me an email/phone number if you want some specifics.

My solution was to buy an end to end 2000 GTS and mount that to my car, leaving my 97 OEM system intact and put away in storage.

Waiting for parts return from ceramic coating (the OEM is all off right now), and then she all goes back together.

Roe High Flow Ovals, newer style header, and ceramic coated all the way to the rear muffler. Expecting no heat issues in the sills.....time will tell!

Sounds pretty bad asp with open headers, that's for sure. Will take some sound files for kicks when the new stuff goes on, just headers, just cats, and then all buttoned up.

Then of course dyno results!

see ya,

EDIT, Janni popped in during my reply. I thought you pulled 10 hp attributed to the headers? Or was your increase a total with cats as well?? I will dyno the entire improvement, once again leaving the header gain up in the air!!!

If you were going through all that trouble you might as well put some aftermarket headers on and make a noticable power increase.

My $.02

I guess my reply to that would be stock 98+ OEM headers are 50% of the gain for 10% of the cost of a true header.

Better bang for the buck elsewhere.

Futhermore, after much debate on where exhaust gains lie, it seems most of the gain is in the cats on a total package........

To each his own, to this kid's wallet true headers are half a charger. Could be my government mandated Canadian cheapness however.

50% of the gain? Does anyone have proof of this? I'm thinking not.

Since this topic is hot, I will give a sales pitch. Here's what I have (All from a 2000 GTS OEM with 3000 miles):

1. Header Gaskets (used price ?)
2. Heat Shields (used price ?)
3. Factory Headers (used price $100 -$200)
4. Flex Pipe connected to/including OEM cat. No clamps, as this piece is welded at the factory - basically, one piece. A hanger is also welded to this piece. (used price $250 a side). I have both sides.

Everything is in perfect condition and OEM (no mods). The prices above is what I've seen in for-sale ads, parts vendors, etc... when sold separately. I will sell everything for $500 + shipping. Everything should bolt right in without any fuss, and accept your factory or aftermarket cat-back exhaust (but please check to make sure before purchasing). At this point, this price is non-negotiable. All of this for the price of both flex pipes used. If interested, email at:

Later

BTW - Dodge sells those flex pipe/cat for $925. Per side!!!
