Hi, Found a new 2008 Viper in TX that Im looking at buying. I live in the eco-**** state of California and was wondering if Vipers are 50 State emissions legal so I can register the car in CA? Does anybody know for sure?

Thanks,

Flash,

Had the same worries. I had the owner take a pic of the sticker before I bought it from outside of CA.

Flash, they're all 50 state. You will still need to get a smog test to register, even thought the car is new and 50 state certifiied.

I bought both of my stock Vipers on Ebay from CA. Just make sure they are stock or have all CARB approved mods. Cat delete probably won't cut it in CA.

I bought my '08 from Woodhouse in Nebraska. When it arrived I insured it and had 21 days to register it in CA. They need a smog test, statement of origin certificate from Dodge and the bill of sale.

Do you really think Dodge would build a near-six figure sports car, largely convertible, that couldn't be driven in California??? Forget the picture of the sticker. Unless the car is modded, you are fine. Even with the picture, it wouldn't help you pass emissions.

In fact, most cars (and motorcycles) do not meet the CA emissions specs. We are in our own little world here. It *****.

You have to bring the car to a motor vehicle office to register it and pay taxes, they have an inspector come out and check the sticker. You need to get the car smogged first. Just do what they say and hope the person you deal with speaks English. Took me about 30 minutes.

Did they start making the BLACK 2008 Vipers already- Who knew :dunno::dunno:

Or, did you switch to yet another color combo. Tell me it's not that Snake Skin Green with Silver stripes one in Texas:lmao:

BTW- both my cars came from Woodhouse in Nebraska- you will not have an issue.

The simple answer and one that should make you feel at ease is that all Vipers built from 1999 are California legal.

We have already delivered 7 new Vipers to California with no problems.

The problem is getting it smogged. Since it is unusual for an 08 to be smogged,(unnecessary) the computers used when smogging have no software to match the 08 cars. They finally got some readings but it wasn't a complete test. At DMV the guy just ask me if I had it smogged and I showed him the paperwork, but he didn't even read it. The sticker is located on the drivers side by the firewall, can't miss it. It doesn't say California on it like they used to, just says 50 state legal. The guy that checked me was confused, so he got another person to help him and was told it was okay. Bottom line is they really don't know what they are doing and passed it anyway!
