    Bent valve?

Dan, Allan, and an anonymous local club member ("Solid Red 98") were right on the money: it was a dropped valve seat. As it was the intake valve that wasn't seating, pulling the intake was enough to show it: for comparison, here's one of the other normal intake passages: So, pulled the...

    Bent valve?

Well, I was only planning on pulling the one head. :-) Randy

    Bent valve?

So, in any event, the head is coming off. Thanks much for the feedback; I'll pull the head this weekend and see what surprise waits for me there... Thanks again, Randy

    Bent valve?

Daily driver, 2000 RT, 79k miles on it. Started a louder-than-normal ticking sound a month or so back. And, no, not the normal Viper engine ticking sound - I'm on around 150,000 miles on two Vipers, this is louder, and gets worse when the engine is warm. With the hood open, does not seem to...

Valve Covers Freshened Up.... Pics Inside

Who did them? I've replaced my 2000's valve covers due to paint bubbling and flaking off, so I have a spare set just ready for refinishing like that... :-)

    Mysterious A/C vacuum tube

Neither Gen 1 nor Gen 2 disable the A/C clutch under any throttle load - the reason it goes hot is due to the loss of vacuum (another side effect of WOT) which opens the flap in the ventilation system and bypasses the evaporator. You should know this simply because turning off the clutch does...

Old version, Lemke three piece tops, some help needed

Sounds like you are missing the pieces to put on your sport pad, which (current version) consists of four machined blocks with hand-tightenable screws that attach to the four studs that you put into the "roll bar". The original version had some pins with detent balls in them, which did not do...

    Hood hinge installation.

Its just three bolts on each side - however, one of the bolts on each side is under the headlight housing, and you can't easily get to those two bolts without pulling the nose covering off - at least, thats how I did it when I replaced my AC condenser and radiator a few months ago.

    WTB: Gen. I Autoform Hardtop

When I had a Gen 1, I wanted one of the Autoform tops also - I wanted the very low-profile top that complemented the car lines, not made the car almost look silly like the factory tops. If thats the aesethetic reasons you refer to, you need to check out either the one-pierce or three-piece tops...

    Hiding the V1

Simple, I pull it out of the mount (leaving the suction cups and mount attached to the windshield), and put it in the trunk. As I have the display mounted with Velcro on the steering column, if I feel particularly paranoid, I'll also pull it off and throw it in the trunk and lock the glove...

    Hiding the V1

I use the suction cup mount and put the unit above the rear-view mirror for the best range fore and aft. I use the remote display (on top of the steering column) so the visible alerts aren't visible outside the car with the top off. I've mounted it this way in both Vipers for over 10 years...

I need a GEN 1 dash (new or used).

When I replaced the dash on my '95 back in 1999 or 2000, I got one of 13 remaining left in the Mopar parts system, and I don't think they are making them anymore, so I would bet there are no more available from the dealer. Always worth a try, of course, but I imagine the original poster looked...

    unbelievable

Sween, we have at least five '98 GT-2s in the S.F. Bay area, all Northern CA club members. Fred 'Driving School' Kinder (in this forum, has three Vipers including the GT-2), Rich, Jerry, Alan, and Bill. Depending on which mall your friend saw it parked, I could make a guess at who it was.

Which parts are 96' RT/10 specific?

The OEM windows for the '96 are unique to the '96 - previous years were zip-up vinyl. However, I think they will fit other gen-1s.

    Best Car Alarm?

I use a pager alarm that hooks up to the stock sensors, and which is enabled at all times - just turn off the receiver/pager when you don't want to hear it. The one I have isn't sold any more, but Crimestopper makes many appropriate/similar models.

Question about how laws of different states apply.

Most of us CA Viper owners don't have a front plate (I don't recall yet seeing any CA Vipers with a front plate). Over 10 years without front plate on a Viper (over 100k miles), and not one word from the constabulary about it.

    Valentine one ???

Mike, I hope you meant "X-band turned off", as X-band is not used, and only K, Ka, and Laser is used in this area. (I have mine set the same way).

    Removing sport pad?

1/2: ratcheting wrench works great, but the problem is getting the wrench back out of the hole after backing the bolt off. Often, you have to just use an open-end wrench, due to this space limitation... 5 minutes versus 10 minutes.

How would an RT do against a GTS???

Actually, thats backwards. RT is lighter (evidently something weighs more, probably the glass) and is almost always faster, given the same year and driver. Actually, the aero difference is significant on the top end, with the GTS getting around 10 to 15 mph higher top end, last I heard. Which...

    Buying Viper RT/10... questions

just happened across this posting, and had to clarify/correct some issues: No, the head gaskets do NOT require replacement on every Gen I viper. A lot of them, to be sure, but I know of a number of people with Gen I's (myself included) that have (or had) significant miles (i.e. 70k to 150k) on...

    Running Temp with Air conditioning

Well, it all depends on what you were doing and the conditions. The only time my Gen II showed such symptoms was running at a brisk pace in 105-degree weather up Hwy 341 from Reno to Virginia City, NV which goes up from ~3,500 to ~6,000 foot elevation in something like 10 to 20 miles. It...

    This is strange!? help

Tator's suggestion of a bad ground fits the symptoms very well - the extra current from the headlight activation could cause a capacitance-effect block, until, as you say, you do something else to break the current block. I've never searched for the dash ground connection (and I would hope...

    This is strange!? help

I don't recall the Gen II switches having the same problem. For that matter, from what I can see in the wiring diagrams, a melting headlight switch connector wouldn't affect the speedo. (I agree that melting headlight switches was a common Gen I problem - I had to splice in a new connector on...

How hard is it to get a soft top?

Actually, this isn't true. In my personal experience, and despite the marketing hype, the three-piece hard top does take up more space in the trunk than the soft top - I've got all three tops (factory hard top, factory soft top, and the "trunk-top" three piece top), and, no matter how I stow...

    Portable GPS Units

I used a Garmin StreetPilot for many years in my '95 RT/10, and made a mount that snapped onto the center Tonneu cover snap (Gen I's have snaps across the top of the dash to hold the Tonneu cover), and held the Garmin slightly below the top of the dash level. It worked really well. When I got...
