04 flywheel clutch change question.

have a 04 viper and its reaching 40k mile mark and i want to change out the clutch.

i also plan to change the flywheel to a fidanza and i herd it has a sensor on it? is the sensor on the flywheel? do i just unplug and plug it into the new flywheel?

also does anyone have instructions on how to drop the transmission on the viper?

there is no sensor in the flywheel. Makes sure you get a gen 3 flywheel. Like the others said, if you have to ask how to drop the trans you definitely need a manual, a torque wrench and a few other thiongs and oh yeah, someone that knows their way around a car....

If the clutch isn't slipping, leave it alone. There is no set mileage on when to replace them. Stock clutches are holding up to 700-750 rwhp setups, a stock engine won't tax it.

Also, those of you that say someone shouldn't work on their Viper make me LOL. Dropping the trans in this car is just as easy as any other rwd car. Maybe even easier than most, there is plenty of room to work under there around the trans. I never worked on a Viper before pulling my own transmission and engine out in the last couple weeks.

As to answer the question above, remove the center console, then the shifter base, the belly plate from the bottom of the car, then the driveshaft. Unbolt the trans from the bellhousing, remove the trans. Then remove the bellhousing, then the clutch.

Agreed on all counts. The 03/04 SRT10s do have a crank trigger on the flywheel as an FYI, but I'm unaware of what it takes to transfer that to an aftermarket flywheel.

The Viper is a basic nuts and bolts car like any other. The transmission is a mass produced piece and the engine is simplistic in its OHV design. I'd say the Viper is one of the easiest late model cars I've had.

going to school for collision repair. and have restored a 68 stang so i know my ways around tools.

the school is letting me use there tools and jack so i want to do this before i finish up school.


the main reason is also because my throw out bearings are worn out and i want to change my trans fluid. also i think i have a spider crank problem since it makes clunks everytime i let off the acelerator. i also have problems with the transmission since the 2nd gear grinds a little when i have the clutch all the way in when changing from first.

i replacing a leaking oil cooler line so ill make a small video of the noise and clunks when i get it back.

driveline clunks are normal- smudeg a little grease in the splines when reinstalling,(driveshaft,not pilot shaft) may or maynot help- makeshure to replace the slave also and fresh clutch fluid.

thanks. im going to check alldata to see if they have any instructions but it looks like its very easy to do.

i also plan to go with a centerforce clutch and as long as i have the transmission out i want to upgrade the flywheel.

Honestly putting an aftermarket budget flywheel and clutch in the car (IE If it doesn't cost you 1500+) is a waste. The stock clutch and flywheel are great and are well engineered to not only hold the power and torque, but also dampen vibrations and balance the system perfectly.

Having tried many clutch / pp / flywheel combos, I would highly recommend the DC Chromoly "light" flywheel along with the OE Luke clutch. Don't forget to change the clutch slave / throw ought bearing (and fluid) too as these do wear out.

As stated above, if you buy the correct flywheel, the sensor will be built into it.

As stated above, only the '03 and '04 cars have the trigger on the flywheel. The Fidanza flywheel for those cars (PN#194991) has the trigger mechanism built in, so all you do is swap flywheels and plug the sensor back in after re-installing bellhousing and transmission.

The GenII and then the '05+ cars have the trigger on the center of the crankshaft (pickup sensor is on side of block).
