Every now and then, my car will pop out of reverse. 32K miles, lots of track miles.

Bad tranny mount? Tranny getting ready to ascend to worn-out parts heaven?

I'm looking for advice on what to check when I lift the car and yank the belly pan to inspect.

TIA, George

I'm pretty sure it's not the reverse lockout solenoid. It's function is to prevent going into reverse while the car is moving forward. This is something else.

Tranny rebuild? You'll just have to drive in the forward gears until then.

I can't believe you crash shift into reverse enough to damage anything. And I like to look for the cheap stuff first. Reverse has it's own fork and rod, doesn't it? Therefore I vote for a shifter adjustment issue (I know, I know, stock shifters aren't adjustable...) and it's not fully engaging and not getting the synchro past the diamond shaped nubbies on the gear. You could loosen the four bolts on the shifter and try to move it as rearward as it can go, then re-tightening.

Thanks for the responses, folks.

The car has either SVS or B&M shifter (the guy I bought the car from couldn't recall which...Bugeater...but he probably installed it while either drunk or distracted by browsing ****** websites anyway). I'll have to yank the console and boots to see if it's got adjustments.

Road course track DE in two weeks...hopefully the tranny'll last a couple more events!

I've heard of this before on cars with hard usage over 30k miles. ..espec with high HP ( ie S/C) It may be internal..I don't know... I would ask the Wizard :2tu:
Good news...used tranny's are reasonably priced.
BTW...I wonder if the new tranny would fit?? ..sposed to be a HD trans.

If it has a B&M shifter on a Gen II then they are adjustable for the forward and reverse stops from memory you have four set screws that limit the shift it may well be that one of these is out of adjustment and has no play.

however i can't remember from mine if reverse hits the stops or not but worth checking.
