2008 Viper Hood

I am wanting to get a 2008 hood for by 03 Viper. Anyone have any idea about the cost of an 08 hood? How bout the cost if the hood is painted?

I think you are going to get a lot of try the search button, but ball park for a hood and paint job is probably around $2000.

Price for an '08 - '09 OE hood from Dodge is $1550. Paint depends on with or without stripes. I paid $821 to paint the hood white with blue fang painted stripes. You'll need about an additional $800 for the other misc hood parts consisting of the grilles, push pins, seals, hood scoop (deflector), and hood pad (insulator).

Send me a PM if you need a breakdown of all of the part numbers and quantities for a complete '08 - '09 hood assembly.

Some members/painters do or do not believe blending into adjacent panels is necessary.

I think the general consensus is that if the color has metallic, its safer to blend unless you have a DAMN good painter. If the color is solid, blending isn't necessary

What does this mean?

It means that paint blending is not always necessary. Sometimes, its used as a CYA step by the paint shop just in case the colors don't exactly match (it's true that some paint finishes are more difficult to match depending on the color, age, weathering, etc.). Viper body panels are painted individually before they are assembled therefore, paint blending is not a good thing on a Viper because any sign of this (painted fasteners, overspray, tape lines, etc.) can affect its value.

As I mentioned, some shops will insist on blending because is covers thems just in case the colors don't exactly match. I consulted with two body shops when I had my hood painted - one wanted to blend into the fenders and the other one said they didn't need to. I chose the latter and everything came out perfect. The factory finishes were supplied by Azko Nobel paints and are supposedly mastered by other paint companies. Just make sure the correct paint code is used.

No modification is necessary.

Beat me to it! The hood pad pins are the typical 1" dia. automotive trim panel pins that can be purchased at AutoZone for a lot cheaper than $3.95 each.

Is it normal for people to not use the vent grilles on the gen 4 hood? Not that I drive in the rain, but I live in Houston and it is common for rain to come out of no where as well as those are some quite large vents, looks like it would be required to be covered???

The vents grills are not solid, but allow hot engine air and pressure buildup to escape from the engine compartment. Rain and car wash water will still get in.

Yea I know that, but it will keep rain out better while driving than nothing at all. It will also help keep any other debris out such as leaves even though I keep it in the garage I found a leaf in there the other day somehow.

Just pulled the vents out of mine today... it's a much more aggressive look IMO. I'd say go for it. There really isn't much reason not to do it... plenty of water going through the mesh, especially when washing.

While it does look more aggressive without the vent grills, removing them is not a good idea for two reasons:

1. The vents keep out larger debris that can occur during driving;and,

2. When parked, someone who wishes to quickly remove a souvenir or just try to trash your engine in some fashion has easy access.

I left mine off at first when I had my Gen III and I was told the above by a Chrysler engineer.

But, if you are not concerned about either factor, you will obtain somewhat better heat extraction from the engine compartment without the vents.
