Thought I would share my impression on these recent upgrades for those who are considering similar mods.

HF Cats:
--------
I went with the Random Tech 3" Ceramic version. I was a little concerned that the metal substrate ones would be too loud. I already had the Corsa 3" exhaust. I was looking for a little more power, a little more aggressive sound, less sidesill heat (to sell the wife on it), all the usual stuff. I also assume I got some weight reduction since these things are dinky compared to the stock cats!

Sound - I was actually surprised how much louder the HF cats made the car. Almost the same jump as when I went from the stock to the Corsa exhaust. Exhaust note is louder, sharper, more of a bark to it and there seems to be more burble on deceleration. Overall, a much meaner sound. It also seems as though some of the drone is back as compared to the Corsa by itself, though not as bad as the stock system. This may also be partially caused by the fact that the car tends to run up in the drone prone 2000-2500 RPM range more than it did with the stock gears and I just notice it more. Might also be some of the reason that some people who installed Corsa didn't get as much drone reduction as they had hoped.

Heat - My sidesills never really got very hot, but they are now cooler than they were before. Barely even warm after a normal drive.

Power - Can't comment on any SOTP power gains since I also installed the gears at the same time. I figure the two changes will cancel themselves out on the dyno.

3:55 gears
----------
Since mine is mostly a street performance car, lower gears seemed to make sense on all fronts. I guess it could be summed up as primarily looking for a scarier ride for my passengers.

Initial impression was that this brought the gearing down lower than I was really expecting. I pretty much use 3rd when I would have used 2nd, 4th instead of 3rd, etc. Not really an issue, but it does mean a little more shifting. 6th is definitely more usable and is now the gear of choice for any laid back freeway driving and I no longer feel the need to downshift evertime I go to pass someone. It is still geared high enough that the engine feels like it is loafing along at 70 or so which is good. I know that going lower, like to 3.73's would have been too low for me.

Definitely got the expected improvement in SOTP feel. Tires break loose easier when rolling in 2nd than before. Haven't really had much of a chance to play with serious launches in first, but my intial impression is that I think it is going to be easier to get off the line without looking stupid.... time will tell on that one. Still haven't recovered from being smoked off the line by a couple of girls in a stock mustang GT.

There is also no noticeable increase in rear-end whine which is one thing I was concerned about. I chalk that up to good quality gears and good installation. I know that others haven't been as lucky.

Both these changes together definitely changed the attitude of the car when I picked it up, even more than I was expecting. As my Viper tech summed it up "She's less of a lady now" :) Almost seemed a bit too much at first, but now that I have about 100 miles on this setup, I'm liking it better all the time.

All parts were bought through PartRack and installed by Timerberline Dodge in Portland. As usual, great service by both.

Ken,
EXCELLENT review. I am still learning about re-gearing the Viper and its purposes, and your post clarified lots of questions!

Thanks for the post!

ChoiceViper, Yeah, I know  They had been dogging me for some time and when the opportunity arose to go at it side by side, I wasn't paying enough attention to my RPM's when I launched since they weren't any significant competition and I smoked the tires off the line. Course by the time I settled down and hit 2nd it was all over, but I was a little worried there for a couple of seconds! Seems like with the 3.07's, it's a little trickier to find the line between bogging out of the hole and going up in smoke t han the 3.55 might be.

I think we're set up just about identically. 3" Corsa, Random Tech H/F cats, tubes and K&N's, Magnecors...and I've got Heffner's air box mod. Love the car the way it is now...sounds perfect, runs like hell!

Dan, seems like I have heard that the top-end drops down to 170's, though I am not sure. Not a concern for me. It's too tough to find enough clear straight road around here to even think about testing the top-end. Space for 140 or so on the other hand is pretty easy to find :)

I also put HF Cats on my car along with a Borla Exhaust and the sound is that of a Viper...A BEAST!

I put 3.73's on my car, I love my gears and really having no 1st gear is freakin' sweet! I suggest at least 3.55's but if you're a real man (kidding!) get 3.73's.

Hey just look at my Sig. I do like the 3.73's, but I only have 400 to the wheels, unlike your 430. They are fun as he!! and sixth is usable too! Still get 20 MPG, can't beat that.

I had 3.73s on my '94 Viper. Made quite a SOP difference on the street, but can't say it did anything at the strip. Which doesn't make sense at all I guess. We all know what a gear can do for SOP...But racing against a friend's '95 who didn't have gears, the ETs were basically identical, and we were both using BFG DRs. You can figure mph using the formula: rpm x tire diameter divided by gear ratio x 336. Note: The gear ratio is overall gear ratio, meaning trans ratio for the gear you're in times rear end ratio. Most people are in 4th at 1:1 ratio, so formula GR (gear ratio) is same as rear gear. You can find any of the element of that formula (gear ratio, rpm, tire diameter) moving the formula around a bit. Gear ratio = rpm x td, divided by mph x 336 for example. If you want to know what your RPM will be at a given MPH: RPM = GRx336xMPH divided by TD etc. You might not want to change that rear gear if it forces you to shift into 4th, or worse yet, 5th, in 1320 feet. Depends on what kind of MPH ou forsee your car achieving.

I think (because I haven't really had a chance to compare) that since I got the 3.55 in my car that my ET in the 1/4 mile is just slightly better. Very slightly. I think I lose a little at the end of the run but I get a better launch because like someone said earlier, it is easier to control the launch and not be caught between bog and burn.

I've got 3.55 gears and I like it.
Somebody said,

"I put 3.73's on my car, I love my gears and really having no 1st gear is freakin' sweet!"

I don't get it. Why is such a short first gear good? Even my old gen1 seems to be traction limited in first with the 3.55 and that's with the sticky Kuhmo 700s. I just can't see why I would want an even shorter first.
I just don't think 3.73 would be an advantage.

I used to have 3.73's on my GTS (filter/tubes/exhaust), and loved 'em. I really don't understand the debate between 3.55 vs. 3.73. There is very little difference between the two. For example, in first gear I think the shift point only differ by around 3 MPH, if memory serves. Either one is an excellent choice for cars under 450 RWHP, IMO.

With regards to a top speed reduction, I have 3:45s and there is not any reduction that I noted. However top speed is attained in sixth gear, hence the reason for my transmission question in a separate post.

In 4th gear with 25.5" rear tires, 3.73 gears will give you 126mph* at 6200rpm, 3.55 gears will give you 132.5mph* at 6200 rpm, and 3.45 gears will give you over 136 mph* at 6200rpm (*if you have the horsepower). If the fuel shut off is at 6200 rpm, you'll have to shift into 5th gear during a full 1/4 mile run when you run out of MPH capability on a modified Viper that's running high MPH in the quarter. That, and the fact that most Vipers make their best power BELOW 6200rpm,(aren't the best shift points about 5600rpm on most Vipers?) means you might want to think seriously about whether you're finished adding HP to your car or not, whether you're going to be making many or any full 1/4 mile runs, and just what kind of MPH capability you'll be needing. No sense putting a gear in only to be taking it out later.

CAUTION - There are two "speed vs gearing" calculators being used by VCA members. One is a Viper Only calculator and the other is on the Unitrax web site. I do not know which is correct, however, on my car with 3.33's there is a ten mile per hour difference at 5800 rpm's. I have asked for clarification, however, both seem to think they are correct. The calculation seem to be pure mathematics, does any one have any input why there is this major discrepancy?

I've been using this formula for 20 years on motorcycles and cars. I don't know about the other websites and their formulas, but the one I stated above and its' derivatives will work on anything. As a note, I saw the same formula somewhere else and there was some decimal points after 336 (like 336.1234 or something) but when I originally saw the formula it was simply stated as "336". My calcs show about 11mph difference between 3.07 and 3.33 at 5800rpm. No reason a Viper would have it's own formula, though maybe someone has plotted the data for various popular Viper gearsets and posted it somewhere.
