The last paragraph in the article at... http://www.imotors.com/concept_cars/vipergtsr_sp.asp says:

"The company says there is no truth to rumors that say Dodge may plug in a souped-up version of the company's 4.7-liter overhead cam V8 in the next Viper. The Viper will always be a V10, the company says. Could the rumor be half-right? Could the company be developing a new V10 based on the ohc V8? Daimler Chrysler isn't commenting on that one, so we'll have to wait and see."

Glad to see they didn’t go with a V8, but were they originally considering a V8 for the future Vipers?

I think Dodge WAS considering a V8 for the 2003 Viper. I remember at VOI5 in Vegas they asked for reactions. Virtually everyone said "NO WAY" and they dropped the idea, and decided to keep it V10.

I don't see how a guy who works at a dealership would know anything about what Dodge was considering for 2006... I bet some of the "in people" on this board don't even know that. And if the past is any example of the future, Dodge won't have a motor for only 3 model years (2003, 2004, 2005). The GTS motor went for 7 years (96-02) and even that was an adaptation of the original GenI engine that ran from 92-95 (for the most part).

I vote that they just give us a supercharged V10 with hemi-technology or something like that. 800HP would be sweet!

i would rather see the V10 stay naturally aspirated....no supercharger...no turbos...just good ole american muscle and cubic inches!

A Viper without a V-10 is not a Viper. Such a vehicle can be a Dodge, but it can't be a Viper.

A V-10 Viper engine doesn't have to be naturally aspirated, nor does it have to displace 8+ liters, but it MUST have at least 450bhp at the crank.

(And no, I'm NOT getting off my soapbox!)

Dean, you disappoint me. Huge cubic inches are as much Viper as the V-10 and/or 450hp.

I vote we call them Semi-Hemi's.

And they wouldn't have to change the sound of the exhaust.

Design some Hemi heads for the new V10 or even semi Hemi heads like the Boss 429 engine. That should give this V10 an easy 100 to a 125 extra HP. Like it needs it. And a 72 degree V with even firing order would sound as good as it goes and rev also, like Regretful said

What rock? Don't talk Chevy here, dude. Thats where the rock talk belongs. I know mother Mopar has been making a Hemi head as far back as the 50s, I mean one for our V10. I know you wanted an excuse too show those Hemi PICS. Well worth it, very nice.

Keep developing this relatively de-tuned V10
Look what GM did with their V8 - apply that level of development to our V10 - we would keep our reliability, drivability and get bunches more horses - a couple thousand more RPM would be great.
And I'm with GTS Dean - it ain't a Viper unless it has a V10

How about a V-16 Viper with two rocket boosters attached and a free fuzz buster. Oh ... and a free Britney Spears CD.

I agree with ya, Gavin. Chrysler should keep working on the production version of a mountain motor, which is the Viper V10. Make it a screamer with about 7000 RPM, VVT would help. Chrysler has not let us down with the Viper. I think they'll continue too build the cult follwing exciting car we've grown accustomed too for a long time.

Semi-Hemi? How about Hemi-Roid! Just kidding!

I think our V-10s would benefit if they changed the block to a correct 72 degrees, instead of the 90 degree angle that it now suffers from.

72 degrees would make our V-10s sing sweetly, instead of shudder and putter, like a delivery truck.

But the 90 degree V10 only came about as a relatively inexpensive way to acheive a monster performing motor using existing tooling made for V8s. Its not likely that DC would invest any more time into this design, so they will probably leave it alone, except for the obligatory periodic small increases in performance, and maybe some other refinements. But when it comes time to do something really new, it would be better for them to just start over. They won't go to a 72 degree set up, because it will pizz off all the 90 degree owners, and make it look like the last ten years were a cruel mistake.

Am I complaining? Not really, because I have an intoxicating rush of a ride, for less than a Ferrari, that really kicks ***.
You just learn to live with the putter. Its still the most wild looking, beautiful, agressive, far-out ride you can buy. I'm really glad Dodge did this thing, and I really LOVE my GTS!

You might want to rethink wanting for our V-10 to go to 72 degrees. The latest F-1 V-10's (certainly the epitome of internal combustion piston engine technology) are currently being widened from 72 degrees to 90 degrees. This is apparently because while the primary vibration is better at 72 degrees the secondary is better at 90 degrees, better enough that the overall vibration is better at 90 degrees. 90 degrees also gives more room for intake air flow optimization....

So while our current 90 degree V-10's may not sound as sweet as an even firing 72 degree V-10, it may turn out that they are ahead of the technology curve, not behind it...

There are only 2 things good about a v10:

1) it has more cylinders than a v8, and
2) they are used in F1

However, there is a big deficiency:

It is NOT A V12!!

...and there is a BIG DANGER:

Cadillac has made a small V12 with the objective of making its envelope essentially that of a v8. In fact, I think the one they did was 6L and was 4" longer than a LS1. Their achievement was that the external dimensions were "essentially" the same as the internal dimensions.

This COULD MAKE IT INTO A CORVETTE!!! And if GM is ever serious about spanking us, then this will happen.

And this is a way hi-tec v12 with variable catistrator valves!!

One final comment on v12's: Ferrari.

Boy I want that Ferrari v12!!! ...well, not so fast.

A 180 deg v12 is not what makes the pretty noise. It's the sub 90 deg that does. Now those cars are unobtainable.

Oh, almost forgot... Mark O, I think you're mixture has leaned out... better check it before you burn something! (to be taken as kind, teasing - not flaming...)

Maybe. But the new Porsche that's $400K + is going to have a 71 degree v-10
