9005/9006/9011 Let\'s Talk Gen II headlamp bulbs (hi-beam = odd size)
I has heard here on the forum a few times that the Vipers have 9005 low beams and 9006 high beams. I ordered a low beam HID kit and when it arrived I thought it looked so nice I ordered a 9006 kit for the high beams without verifying the fitment (supplier also thought highs = 9006). Started install and realized there was an issue. Could not find the bulb sizes in the service manual, but the owners manual says 9005 low and 9011 for the high beam. I decided to use the 9006 kit in the low beams of my truck which I verified are 9006, and then grab some Sylvania Silverstars halogens for the Viper high beams (low only HID allows for totaly clean install with ballst/ignitor unit completely within the headlight enclosure). Go to store and cannot find ANY 9011 bulb of any sort. Sylvania hard copy fitment guide shows 9005ST-9005CB for the Viper in a column labeled "high beam/low beam." Confused I come home and pop onto Sylvania site and find the below fitment guide for bulbs.
This taught me that the ST and CB designations after 9005 are the Sylvania tradenames Silverstar and Cool Blue not a sizing parameter. NOTE that they do not list a bulb for the high beams. What is up with that? Go down in the garage and find that the Silverstar 9005 bulbs I had in the low beams of the Viper fit into the 9011 high beam locations just fine (9006 will NOT fit in a 9005 locations - too big around). So I ended up where I wanted to be, but what the heck is a 9011 bulb? HID Supplier mentioned to me that the Gen III fog lights use a 9011 bulb. Anyone know of an online source that explains how all the bulbs are different? I am assuming that the positioning of the element/light source on a 9011 is different than a 9005 and theoretically my high beam reflectors lose their DOT compliance parameters with 9005 bulbs but I cannot verify.
