94 gray dash ?? what to do

have a like new 94 r10 , the dash looks bad the gray finish is sticky and and rubbs off , what should i do to refinish it?? any ideas. thanks to all

It turned out to be a pretty simple job when I did it to my '94 last winter. I went with flat black and really think it came out great.

Here's what I did:

Remove dash, bezel and door pull trim and spray with oven cleaner to loosen the old paint.

Use steel wool to remove old finish (starting with rough wool than working to fine wool). I used a dremel with a fine wire wheel and fine grit paper to get into the grooves etc.

When all old finish is removed and the surfaces are smooth rinse with water, dry then wipe down with rubbing alcohol to remove your fingerprints etc...

I used rattle-can primer for plastic bought at Home Depot then several coats of flat black....



I did mine over a weekend, spending a few hours and around $20. The result was well worth the time and effort.

I just stripped mine with Easy-Off oven cleaner this week and sanded with 320 and then 600 sandpaper. Took all parts into the shower for a final wash down and to do the fine crevaces with a soft toothbrush. I consiered painting it black (easiest fix) and also an imitation carbon fiber hydro printing ($70 a SF quote) In the end, I decided the black did not look original and the fake carbon fiber looked too fake. I am having it professionally painted in grey to match the seats and other vinyl parts in the interior. The dash, radio surrounds, glove box door and door handle trim will set me back $350 done by a dash restoration specialist. Not bad since I replaced it entirely once for around $500 and I don't think replacements are availble all all now. That will keep the original look and eliminate the fuzzy paint issues.

My wife begged me not to paint it myself after all the work of stripping and cleaning it. My spray painting history is iffy at best and she told me that sometimes it is best just to pay the man the $2.00 and get it done right,

I repainted in flat black and think it looks much better than gray. Works better with my carpet and door trim. the easy off method is how i did it. also 3 coats of clear coat.

I went with black not because it's the easiest way to go (though it is..) but because I really like the look better.

i did the entire thing. the paint was a little more difficult to get off on the guages but it eventually came off. same with the radio surround.

I'll get some pics of mine today, I didn't paint it so I'm not sure how tough of a job it was but its painted red to match the car, i like how it looks.

I went with flat black all around.

I had a spare radio bezel so it was time for some test color etc. I tried a close-to-original grey but knew it wasn't stock or fuzzy..... Not close enough or attractive enough (IMO).So..
I tried gloss black... too shiny. I decided to try flat black with a coat of the speed wax/cleaner I use (Honda, Pro-Polish).

Perfect!

The final sheen is a mat finish that perfectly matches the tops of the doors. The final look makes the lower grey interior feel as though it wraps around you and makes the rest of the grey stand out all the more. A nice finish for what most would call a basic interior.

I really do like the flat black with the gloss black around the gauges and radio surround. The picture of the red dash in the previous thread do show how much a mismatch of the grey interior parts and dash (the glovebox door) really were. The fuzzy dash just seems to get darker with age. I have seen the body colored red before, but they normally paint the glovebox door also.

Anyway, I think you have convinced me that flat black is the way to go.

Got a price quote on new parts in black. A little over $1,300 now for the dash, glovebox, radio surround and two door handle surrounds. Still available but pretty pricey. Looks like it is gonna be painted at that price.

I thought all black might be to much, but not so much. I think it looks really good, I like it. The red breaks it up just enough.
