96 GTS out of Wellborn collection up for auction will set the market

This looks to be a great example of a very collectable Viper (no affiliation). Very few clean, low mile, stock 96 GTS's ever come on the market. These will be six figure cars in the near future. It will be interesting to see where the market is heading on these low production very desirable early Vipers.

I looked at the write up. It's got over 10Kmiles. How is this particular GTS going to set the Bench Mark ?
I know of others that have less mileage than the one being offered. Amazing what the right camera will
do for your vehicle.

The photos do look great. I'm not so much thinking this is The Benchmark car for 96 GTS, just a very good one worthy of collectors. There are very few non-modified solid 96 GTS's trading hands or available, so it will be interesting to see how much the market is moving.

My belief is there are more trading hands than most people are aware of. One with < 2000 miles, original owner sold last week for mid $50's. That seems to be the "benchmark" for very low mileage '96 GTS's at the moment. I do believe these have more collector value than any other Viper but I agree with ViperJon. They aren't coming close to their original sticker price (yet).

These aren't that rare and they make 450 hp. A chick car like the BMW and Lexus make that in their grocery getter models. I don't see any of younger gen kids interested in owning a car they can't tweet and Instagram from. Plus it's a manual which means it would be harder to Facebook. Why would they want something like that.
I mean I'd love to see prices go up, because my whole retirement is based on selling the car when I get old.....

I grew up wanting a Lamborghini Countach. A few years ago you could find nice examples in the $90-$110k range. Now those nice examples are $300-400k. ***....

Trouble is, obviously there isn't a bunch of people like me that are excited about Vipers. If there was, the price would reflect it. Most of the younger generation doesn't get it, they have parents who arrange play dates for their children. They'll never grow up to be men.....

The kids that were born in the late 80's early 90's will be the future buyers of Vipers, and they arent that screwed up as the kids born after 2000. I even saw some cool little 10 year old at a car show that knew more about my viper than I did. His dad said it is his favorite car and they have been going to car shows trying to find one to look at. I let the little guy and his brother sit in my car and made their day.. It is rare to see kids now impressed with an iconic American Sportscar like the viper, they much rather plastidip their cars and put ridiculously huge rims with silly camber.. The Viper has been and always will be a niche car and the supply and demand will dictate future pricing. The are FAR more rare than any average 60's-70's muscle cars with low production numbers in comparison to the Corvette...

That being said, I dont see that particular car this thread is about being the ultimate example, but some rich dude will overpay for it no doubt cause its at that auction..

I was in Las Vegas for the Barrett-Jackson Auction. They had a 96 ( same Car ) with 6k miles on it, not in the best shape, some scratches on it, inside was just ok, looked like the car had 60k. anyway it sold for 45k. I think the asking prices for these nice GTS's are between 45-54 k, from I'm seeing, I will be at this one to make sure it goes for that, if not I'll be buying it!.,

Not true. We are in the worst economy since WWII. The younger generation has no money or decent job for that matter. Older folks want a plush smooth riding sports car or a corvette. It will come around eventually.....like it always does.

I am not sure that a Mecum Auction would really set the price for any car, especially a Viper. Vipers are a unique market and you really need the right buyer in the audience to buy that car. That said vipers like that BW one are getting harder and harder to find and are slowly disappearing from the market.

I just did the math, and from 1992 to 2002 there were 10,013 RT10's and 7117 GTS's produced not counting the ACR which Im unsure if it was a GTS or RT10 if not specified on the registry. Either way 18,000 Gen 1 and 2 vipers in existence puts the future collect-ability into perspective when you realize there were 10,000 63 split window Corvettes and about 34,000 67 Camaro RS/SS's made, and both those cars demand a high dollar today.

I think rare/low production numbers will equal long term collector value. They have made less Vipers that most other exotics, and it is a good old American piece of history. They will double in current resale value in the next 20-25 years IMHO.

Although I agree with you about the older generation, I disagree about the younger generation. I see more really young kids with crazy expensive cars and everything else than I've ever seen. Bottom line is, it's a buyers market.

The marker shifts due to taste and economic changes. Several years ago late 60s early 70s HEMI cars were top dollar and everyone jumped on that market. The restomod market was flat. Now it's flipped.

The car, despite factors we can't control has always had, for a positive, a limited following due to the lack of production numbers.
There's no way to really predict the value of any car. The market ultimately dictates the value.

FWIW, no matter the value, be happy you have one and not a "me too" Corvette....oh you have a Cwhatever, Z06, ZR1..oh yea..."me too."
