Currently own a 2011 Camaro SS convertible with manual 6spd and LS3. Also have a modified exhaust. LOVE the torque and exhaust note. Love how scary it feels. But I've had it for 5 years now and I'm ready for something new.

I'm absolutely in love with the Porsche 997.1 Turbo and I've researched it extensively. The problem is, at $65,000 and up, it's just out of my price range. I'd have to save for at least a year, maybe two.

That's why I'm looking at Vipers. So much more reliable than the Porsche Turbo, easier to work on, and just a tad slower. The Turbo is more elegant for sure, but the Viper is so theatrical. In its own way, I think the Viper is better looking and will definitely get a lot more attention. But right now, the main thing attracting me to the Viper is price. I could easily buy one, enjoy it for a few years, and sell it at no loss. Or even better, fall in love and keep it forever.

I want the gen 2 GTS, doesn't everybody? But I've always owned convertibles. I want that GTS ass and roof line, but I can't imagine life without a droptop.

So what's your favorite droptop as far as looks? As far as performance, are the newer generations fast enough that I should stop looking at the gen 2? Has anyone owned a 997 Turbo, what are your thoughts between the two?

Do you plan to take the car to the track?
If so, give up the ragtop.
If you have to have a ragtop, go with a GenIV convertible. It will hang with, if not out run, the 997.1 Turbo on the street and walk away from it on the track. One other consideration, rarity. I don't know about you but I see a dozen Turbos a day and probably three times that of the garden variety 911. When was the last time you saw a Viper, of any generation, in morning traffic?

For one you will not have to bring a bottle of Vaseline when you take multiple trips for maintenance to a Porsche dealer or your local "European " specialist by name Gustaff. If you like being ***** buy a Porsche. Was that convincing enough?

This is how I ended up with my current GTS after owning multiple 996 & GTS.
Put an offer in on the GTS. Put an offer in on a 996TT. First one to respond won.

Honestly, the two are so good in totally different ways I couldn't make the decision. The 997.1 is a little quicker than the 996, which is on par with the GTS. After that mod for mod they are both on par with each other. Viper gets the looks.
If you need of comfort and usable hauling capacity, go with the turbo. If you don't, go with the GTS. 997.1TT coupe with a manual will likely hold its value more than a GTS.

The only expensive repair/maintenance for the 911TT is going to be the clutch/flywheel and spark plug/ignition coil replacement.
