Nice write up. How long did the repairs take?

Thanks. About 5 to 6 hours. Also, for those of you with larger aftermarket halfshafts ( I have Unitrax extreme duty ), you need not be concerned about clearance with the added diff mounting reinforcement bracket. Good luck with your recalls!

I just inspected my steering gussets and cross member today on a rack. There is no sign of cracking anywhere. The inspection for the steering gear recall is a very easy procedure for anyone to do. It is not hard to see at all. With a little mirror and a light, you see all that is required. As for the reinforcement bracket there are, unfortunately, no certified Viper repair facilities within several hundred miles.

Also, from the information I have --the differential recall ended with the build date of Oct. '99. Mine is 1-00. I don't believe I'm affected by the differential recall. Can anybody verify this? I only received the steering gear cross member paperwork from DC.

Thought this may be of interest to some.
I came across a copy of Recall 998 in paper format and scanned it into a PDF. You'll need Adobe Acrobat "READER" to view it. I broke it down into two parts to make it easier to download. (These may be slow to download so give them a minute or two if you don't have high speed access)

In case anyone is interested, I wanted to convey my 998 recall experience. For those of you in the VCA North Texas Region I had mine done at Frank Parra Dodge in Grapevine. They have a beautiful, brand new facility including an air conditioned service bay. I highly recommend Tommy Hill as a Service Consultant ( direct line 817-410-7554 ) who understands Viper owners and takes great care in overseeing your Viper's safe keeping while at the dealership. Only he or the Viper Techs are permitted to drive your Viper as necessary at the dealership or offsite for any testing with your prior permission. Your Viper is kept in the air conditioned shop or outside Tommy's office window under his watchful care awaiting your scheduled pickup. Robert Morel is the lead Viper Tech and is excellent. These gentlemen are a great team that ensure that your Viper and it's owner are treated well. You should also note that the great Rich Carlson has trained the Parra team on this recall. I asked to stay and view the 998 recall repair to educate myself and be able to relate the process to my fellow VCA members which they granted. For those of you in the North Texas VCA, I'm sure you are aware that Frank Parra Dodge is one of our Club's dealership sponsors. As far as the 998 recall, I was fortunate in that the inspection did not reveal any existing cracks at either the diff or steering rack mountings, and therefor, did not require the extensive tear down repair procedure. My Viper was the eleventh one that Robert has completed the recall on and he has the procedure down pat. In addition, the dealership has their own body shop on site with a certified welder named Vinney that ensures the required welding procedures are utilized. The brackets, gussets and welding are very stout and appear like they were completed at the factory. Everything is painted and looks great. I'm confident that the factory field recall kit and excellent installation completed by Robert and Vinney have corrected this issue. I'm very glad that I had it done and highly recommend that all affected owners have this completed to ensure your Viper is operating at it's best! BTW, Steve Wayne our Club V.P. had his beautiful machine there to have the 999 recall completed. Steve, just wanted to let you know that while your Viper was up on the lift I noticed a few water spots on your frame. You must have driven too fast in your driveway after washing the car! Just an FYI, so you can make sure to clean them off...disgusting!!!LOL! Tommy, Robert and Vinney, thank you for a job extremely well done and for the hospitality extended to me. Well, time to make some serious smoke and pull some heavy lateral G's with complete abandon knowing my Viper is now bullet proof! Oh! what a feeling...VIPER!

This recall is pretty serious. When I read the documentation a couple of weeks ago, I thought WOW! , this board would be full of Posts about it. It sort of died and not much said.

The big deal is if cracks are found. To cut the steering rack assembly off and reweld it is no minor task, unless you love bump steer.

Then the rear end. If cracks are found, the gas tank has to come out. I just think of all of those posts and pictures of those guys with some awesome stereo systems. We'll those may have to come out too. Not an easy task.
