The "rating report" says it needs a 3/4 syncro... But that wouldn't slow me down if I was in the market to buy.

Notice there are NO photos of the engine? If it's OVER 450HP, then it can't be a stock Gen I... do you think he "updated" the enginer to a Gen II too?

Either way, it's surely car worth a look!

JDR,
If it is a 96 RT they came stock with a Gen II motor, some call them the Gen I and 1/2 because they have the Gen II motor with the Gen I suspension and frame.

96 has the Gen II suspension, and the Gen I motor. The exhaust was routed out the back which gave it the extra 15 horsepower.
97 the RT got the Gen II engine.

a 96 RT/10 has the aluminum A-arms and suspension components from the 96 GTS. It has a Gen1 motor but sports a rear-exist exhaust. This accounted for the 15hp increase over the side-exhaust cars. The hood is also from a GTS, but the NACA duct and luvers were not cut at factory (aka: smoothies). Gen1 motors are easly spotted by their throttle body setup. Gen1's have duel throttle cables, one for each TB. Gen1 has a single throttle cable, and a bar-linkage between the 2 TB's.

The hack-job this guy did looks like complete junk. They're aftermarket windows. The doors look to be the original, but have had the back edge "glassed" in and painted body color. They intrude about (what looks to be) 2"+ forward towards the nose of the car. NO shots with the glass up, so I doubt it's OEM GTS glass.

You CAN retrofit the GTS doors onto a 96 RT, but it requires some body work and wiring.

I wouldn't touch this car.

I just got an e-mail back the seller. He says that the prior owner had most of the work done with J.H. (you know who) but wouldn't confirm that the windows were done by the afforementioned.

It is an interesting idea. Add some airbags and the wife won't make me buy a Gen II.

Madmaxx, is totally correct '96 RT/10:
Gen II suspension
Gen II rear exhaust (although unique, no side sill
mufflers)
Gen I hood (smooth)
Gen I engine 415 HP (2 throttle body cables)
These are the obvious and visible differences.

I think Mad, you had a typo in the last sentence of your first paragraph, you said: "Gen1 has a single throttle cable, and a bar-linkage between the 2 TB's."

You meant Gen II.

ruckdr: Yep, ment gen2 :) Typed too fast.

Tomer: Wassap man? I sold my RT/10 a while back. I had a lotus for a short while, but am back on the hunt for a Viper. Looking for a Black GTS, Cognac interior. Plan on putting twin hairdryers on her and really having some fun ;) Still know more about the Viper line than any other car, most fun I've had working on a car in a very long time. Looked at Ferrari, but still a snake-fan at heart I think.

Technically, only the hood's inner support structure was from the (then upcoming) GTS. The RT inner structure tool wore out, so they started using the GTS inner structure tooling a year early. The outer "smoothie" skin on '96 RT/10's was from the same tool as had been used for previous RT/10's.

The GTS outer skin was made from a different material (SMC) and from a completely different tool. It was not just a "smoothie" skin with holes cut in it for the GTS louvers and NACA duct, it was an all new piece.

The windows look like they might have been done by Chris of Viper Car Parts in AZ, as a matter of fact that looks a lot like the car Chris had at VOI in Vegas... He used all the guts and glass from '97 RT/10s, and sliced the stock doors to put them in, and lots of weather stripping. Note it has been painted as '96 RT/10's came with "sabre tipped" stripes.

Actually not a bad car for 35K if it is straight. The fact it has been repainted makes me think it has been repaired at some point in its life. If done well, still not bad for 35K.
