The ZR1 was driven buy a GM engineer tech and NOT a pro Viper driver with only a 2 second difference. Plus most Corvette and Viper owners dont track their car and with the majority being street driven, the ZR 1 will kick ass on many new Vipers.
If you are going to come out with the excuses. BTW if you do own that car in your SIG , very nice. Anyway I figured you would at least have your facts straight. How do you get a two second difference from 7.22 against a 7.26 2?? Your math is incorrect my friend. Not only that there is much more time to improve upon. Again waiting in the REAL excuses. 4 Seconds is nothing to overlook.

Awesome video using the over and under, gives a real good look at the different driving skills and shift points.

Please do some research as I did before replying. Look at the ZR1 video again and see who the driver is in the credits at start of video. Its Jim Mero. Then google his name and see his position. He is a GM engineer (with obviously a lot of track time) but NOT a pro driver as the ACR dude with tons of Ring experience.
There's always someone who cries what if, what if. The times are what they are. Get over it. :2tu:

The ZR-1 is faster than the 7:26 it ran, but by 3-5 seconds. I suspect it can run 7:22, or maybe a 7:21 with a pro guy in there and Nissan/Porsche time at the ring.

But the ACR with some time at the ring will run 7:15 or so without a doubt. I dont think they should change the gearing, but the guy would have time to sort out shift points and get used to the car.

Either way you slice it, the ACR is faster, but a ZR-1 on MPSC would be an interesting battle, I think a nail biter.

I would bet that GM put the best driver they had available for the ZR1. They knew they had a lot on the line and Mero is an engineer, probably on the ZR1 platform, and if so knew the capabilities of the car and how to get the best time out of it. I am not a racer, but Mero looked like he drove the ZR1 pretty dag on good. People will always make excuses, what ifs, etc. Bottom line is the ACR kicked ---! :headbang:

I agree. The two miss shifts alone must have cost a few seconds. I cant believe that banging is the splitter. I would love to see what it looked like after the run. Cant wait for a high def DVD. That is awesome.

I posted this on a similar thread yesterday, so my apologies for the duplicate language...

The VCA treasurer actually approached SRT a couple months ago after reading the various threads about sending the ACR to The Ring - over and over again. Like many individuals here had already done, we offered to help Chrysler pay to send a car and team over there. Turns out they had already been discussing it internally. Guess what? Our enthusiasm helped finalize that decision. And the cost to the club? Prepare the video footage shot over there. It was SRT that suggested the decal on the dash. Is there anybody that still doubts the group's dedication to the Viper and its owners?

The folks at VOI got to see the finished product when we debuted the extended length, higher definition video just before Motor Trend published the raw footage last night. Goosebumps abounded as the video started with published times of Lamborghini, Ferrari, Bugatti Veyron, and that Chevy thingie. The run included telemetry such as the lateral G's and down force. Ever seen a car generate 1200+ pounds of down force? The folks at VOI did and the cheers were deafening. The wrap up at the end with commentary from the driver (Tom Coronel) was awesome, including just a little dig at our Chevy friends across town. The VCA will make that video (suitable for your big screen TV) available very soon. Look for an abbreviated version on You Tube at some point soon.

Our thanks to Brian Paddock of Paddock Productions for the awesome video editing with very little time to do it. This run was done on August 18th and has a few other interesting facts to go with it:

  1. Tom had never driven the ACR before.
  2. He broke the record on his third lap in the car.
  3. He missed two shifts (not just one).
  4. He faced a pretty strong headwind on that final straight - so much so that the Viper's stock gearing and enormous down force made it impractical to use 5th gear.
  5. The car did NOT bottom out or hit the wheel liners: The Ring is notorious for chewing up splitters on high performance cars and the sounds you hear are the splitter doing exactly as was expected. Indeed, many teams fully expect to have only 10% of the original splitter still intact at the end of a 24 hour race at Nürburgring.
Another interesting thing to note is that both the ZR1 and GT-R were manufacturer claimed with NO media certification. The ACR run was witnessed directly by two independent media sources, one of which was Motor Trend. So for independently witnesssed and verified times the ACR owns the record by a lot more than 4 seconds. :D

Our thanks to the SRT folks for making so many dreams a reality. We are honored that you allowed the VCA to play a role in such a momentous occasion. Oh, and we will indeed make DVD's available that will show you all kinds of cool stuff, like this:

Anyone who pays 20k over sticker has to much money or not to many brains IMO, but 2 seconds advantage on a track that takes over 7 minutes to get around is not a lot whichever car was faster. I am just as sure as you are the vette was no more prepped than the viper and since it had no ACR in its sites probably less. Ron Fellows on that track in the ZR1 would have probably been in the mid teens, and maybe with a different driver or gearing in the ACR it would be also. To really make a fair comparison without all this forum BS would be to have the cars on the same track the same day with the same driver in both and then you would know which car truly is the fastest around the ring. I did think it was impressive that the ACR was able to turn a faster lap than a car that has better accelleration and 30 mph more top end than it does but when I gave it more thought I came to the conclusion with a difference that big it almost had to be the superior driver that made up for the lack of speed. I think both cars are great and would like one of each, and I as matter of fact that is exactly what I am going to do!

The ZR1 boys have been crowing for a month about the ring time, now it's excuse after excuse. Tough luck.

On the Corvette forums they are actually giving respect to the ACR. They are not coming up with excuses. You should see the GT-R forums though. They are coming up with everything they can think of. I have actually seen more excuses from two here on this site, they know who they are, than the Corvette forums.

i agree, most of them are a little upset that the z06 has not seen any performance upgrades in last 3 years...most of them don't want to spend 100k+ on a zr1 so they are getting a little frustrated with the current z06

Being that I do not own a Viper or the ZR1, I still am proud that American made cars costing way less than the exotic cars kicks butt. I totally understand the loyalty to your car company but I am happy to just watch our American made cars do so well. I will have one and maybe both someday soon but it is a great day when Dodge and GM can take the top spots on that track compared to the extreamly expensive competition.

Last I heard that was the going rate for the (new) ZR1.

Not really, the Z06 hasnt even been tested until this year. Prior to the 08 Viper and GTR there wasnt any all around (straight line and handling) competition under 200k. What would GM have needed to improve for?

The only thing the Z06 needs is some better build quality, and a set of good tires, but it's still faster than anything that isnt running much stickier tires. Oh yeah, and maybe a good set of brakes.

But how many cars will beat it in a straight line?

GT2 (maybe)
08 Viper
Scuderia
CGT
LP650 (???)


And on the road course, imagine a set of PS2's not to mention the R-comps a lot of cars come with. I think the gripe for tires far outweighs the gripe for more power or performance since 90% of Vette owners cant even ring out a base C6 to be complaining about the Z06's performance.

With the ACR taking the 'Ring lap, anyone check out Road & Track Sept 08? The ACR took first on two tracks, second on another and fourth on the oval. The only problem...gear ratio's held it back. With all the "sounding off" of ZR1 lovers, they ought to check out the mag. I know they used the Z06 but really, the ZR1 wouldn't have made enough difference to take down the Viper.

Let Sabine take both vehicles for a drive, two laps fast lap counts. That'd show everyone! She know's the track but hasn't tracked either car, she'd be like most owners...know the road but not the car before they cut loose. I for one, will take my Viper any day over the "every tom, dick and harry" Vette!!

Congrats SRT and Viper nation. The fact that this was not a well thought out, planned months ahead etc assault on the Ring is astounding. Just 3 days and 4 laps with a driver thats never been in this particular kind of Viper and with no front splitter, not much prepping etc and still beat the ZR1 by 4 secs is ********. I cant even form proper sentences lol.

I dont want to hear any excuses from anyone as to why the ACR did what it did. The aero, gearing and suspension wasnt optimised for the Ring like the GTR and ZR1. They had months, years to develop a fast time on the Ring and many many more laps. Imagine if the gearing, aero and suspension were optimized. LMAO. This is an absurdly fast car. Its great to see the Viper finally humble the clowns that used to point to prior Ring times as a reason for the Vipers illegitimacy as a handler. It ***** all comers without being properly setup and driven...LOL...It almost seems like the Viper is Usain Bolt of the car world. Its not even trying 100% and easily beating the world class field.

Take a bow SRT:headbang: Please go back with a serious factory effort. No need to leave any room for the more focused GTR waiting in the wings to beat this "half assed" time:D

Well actually it has been done that way many times in many magazines for many years. I do agree the fastest so far at the ring is the ACR, but crown it king, king of what? king of the ring? I don't think either car should be crowned king unless it continually beats the other in head to head competition and as far as I know neither has went head to head yet but I am sure that will be soon. I bought a new ACR but I don't want it crowned king until it beats something other than a clock, and a ZR1 would work just fine but weather it does or not is not going to change my opinion about the ACR or why I bought it.

Yeah that 150 extra hp the ZR1 has probably wouldn't of made any difference:dunno:

I always thought to get an *** whippen you had to have something on the track with you? Hell I never even saw official timing gear, start or finish for either car! I did enjoy the video of the runs though and the viper guys said it was the best time. Do you think your ACR will run times that good?
