aftermarket options for 2001 ACR shocks?

Ive been reading up a lot on the ACR shock situation and am a bit confused as to what aftermarket alternatives may be available.

Is it possible to fit a 2001 ACR with any aftermarket shocks that would fit a standard GTS?

My guess, without the service manual in front of me, would be yes. My ACR (2000 w/Koni's) has solid steel cone bushings which ride up against the spherical bearing in the shock. You'd have to change out those parts w/ the standard shock accessories. Also you may have to change the springs as well. Call Dan @ DC Performance, he'll have the facts for you.

The ACR springs are ground flat on top and bottom; the regular springs are flat only on the top end (at the spring cap.) You should be able to change the shocks and springs as a package.

To add to what has been said, I think the mounts on the cars are the same - brackets, chassis, etc. - so if you want to take the ACR shocks off you can swap them with something else. But also like was said above, you will need the appropriate hardware.

Thanks for the great info guys! Can I inquire what the rebuild process was like? I assume you had them removed, kept the car up and out of commission for the duration, and sent them off.

How long does the rebuild process take?

I like the ACR, but I'm not going to track it and the shock rebuild situation seems impractical for me. Going to the lesser setup does seem to kind of defeat the purpose. Im thinking that maybe the ACR just isnt for me.

I didnt realize how ******** that shock setup is and was thinking it was more along the lines of just an upgraded suspension the way the Z06 is in oomparison to the regular Z51 Vette option.

The rebuild process is a week or so...depending on how you prefer shipping.The cost "was" $600.00 a pair plus parts(bad,broken or worn severly is extra).That price included all seals and parts(std rebuild parts)needed and a dyno of the pair.

I purchased a set of Aldens temporary....sorry,not a good choice in comparison.Get the Dynamics redone if needed...it`s the best and cheapest way for the genII ACR.

OK... last question for the group and I know this is a tough one. But is there any sense among the ACR community of just how long you can really go before you're inevitably going to need a rebuild? I hear some "50k and everything is great" stories, and then some "I've had 5 rebuilds in 20k miles" stories. HUGE difference! And it doesnt seem like any of these folks are really tracking the car.

Last thing is just a subjective opinion on the ride quality on the standard setting (whatever comes from factory). Ive heard everything from you get tossed around and out of your seat and need to really pay attention or you'll end up in a ditch, to the car is not all that different from a standard GTS in street manners. Any opinions there would help me a lot too...

Thanks!!! Im really close to making the ACR vs RT/10 decision and would hate to be scared off the ACR by the shock situation (which is happening) only to later regret it because I learn it isnt THAT bad.

I bought my Penske package in 2000 and NO FLUID LEAKS, EVER. I do check the nitrogen pressure about once a year. That does bleed a bit.

I bought an ACR last november and didn't know much about the suspension until after the fact. Don't let that scare you away from an ACR. Lets face it, its a Viper. You should be paying attention at all times anyway. One thing that I would suggest is to switch out the rear springs. This was done to my car befor I bought it and i'm glad. I was gonna put the OEM 1100 lb springs back in but everybody I talked to said leave the 850 lb (these were put on by the previous owner) springs on. They make a word of difference for basic street driving. The springs came from parts rack. Jon (from parts rack) told me that if I was ever gonna track the car that they should be fine to use so no worries there. Bottom line, if the ACR is what you really have your eye on...GO FOR IT!!!!

Bought my ACR Jan 07 with 11,400 miles. Has slight leaks in one front and one rear. Ride can be quite bouncy at 30 to 70mph. Smooths out at higher speed (80+), and you're glad the suspension is what it is at much higher speed. I have a set of normal stock springs and shocks I may someday put on, but no more than I drive, i'll probably send the dynamics in one winter for a rebuild, and keep it stock. I'm glad mine is an ACR, rough ride and all.

When did Moton start making shocks for Gen 2? I have looked but never could find anything. I love the Motons on my Gen3. If they make them for Gen 2 I will order some on Monday....

Definitely definitely get the 850lb rear springs from JonB. They are the same manufacturer and no one will know the difference except that the ride is transformed to "normal." Listen to him, he knows whereof he speaks.

I didn't ask ; but, doubt that there is any long term warranty since they are race shocks. I'm sure that they would fix anything found fairly soon that was due a mistake on their part. I had my rears rebuilt at 27kmiles 3 years ago. I've had 6 weekends of Viper Days track time with them and am now at 40kmiles without issue. Fronts haven't needed a rebuild..

I tried to take a family vacation on the 1-13, worked till the 3rd drove 900 miles for the 4-5 and then had to come home early because I was out of contact with Emails. Got back the 6th at 2am and found 345 emails and 147 missed calls!!! I won't do that again that's for sure. Sorry if I let any of you guys fall through the cracks those days I will try and stay on top of it better.
