Air Leak in 546 HRE\'s

I have been losing about 1-1.5lbs of air pressure per day out of one of my front HRE 546 wheels. I had tried tightening the value stem, but it did not help. So I needed to tank the wheel to find out what was happening, now I know why I got that [******] jet tub in the master bath. I would have never guessed the problem, it was not the valve stem, air was leaking from one of the mounting bolts that mounts the main wheel section to the outer rim, gee there are only 40 of these bolts per wheel...

Yah, three-piece wheels sometimes do that. First check the torque on the bolts; they may just be loose. Assuming that's not it, a good wheel shop can fix it for about $40 - they unmount the tire, separate the halves, clean out the old RTV, put in a new bead, and put everything back together.

Been there, done that.

These don't have that problem! Some poor guy decided to go with HRE's on his snake and gave me a great deal on these :D Love the way that they make my old 94 RT/10 look. Nice to see you posting here Jim, look forward to hearing from you more often. If you bought them from Jon B at Parts Rack I am sure he will point you in the right direction. Good luck!! Chad

Re: Air Leak in 546 HRE\'s

I talked to HRE this morning, Mike at HRE stated not to torque the nuts greater than 25ft/lbs of torque and stated the best thing to do is to take the tire off and reseal the edge where the two pieces meet. He stated that the seal was probably pierced in one location. He stated it is not necessary to take the pieces apart, but to clean the seal edge, using acetone as a final step and then reseal it.
