Do not panic. Happened to me too. But I have a 92 and there are different solutions for different years. Try doing a search. This will bring up the past threads.

There may be a reset button somewhere if you check your manual.

hold both buttons down at the same time for several seconds - this is supposed to reset the system.
Then drive immediately to your Dealer and get the 96 alarm replaced under the appropriate TSB.
