I am just in the finalization stages on my new Viper and I would like to get some information before we close the deal from you guys.

What do you guys pay in insurance ? I've been quoted $ 1400.00 yearly with $ 5000.00 deductable on comprehensive and collision. They also want a global positioning device installed before they insure the vehicle. How much is this device and where do I find one?

When I test drove the car, it felt very tight...............does it loosen up over the course of adding mileage to it or does it stay pretty much tight as when it was first purchased.

Finally, how should I have Dodge sweeten the offer. What should I be asking for to throw in other then extended warranty?

Thanks in advance.

Did they agree to throw in extended warranty? Be happy if they throw in a key chain...

Not sure where you are located, your age, or your accident history. That said, the insurance sounds a little restrictive for the price and deductible. Never heard of a GPS requirement, although I suppose that could be for theft purposes. I assume that the Viper PCM is similar to other "black box" technology that tracks recent inputs prior to an accident (speed, braking, etc.). I know I had these on my GMC when it was wrecked a few years ago.

Many pay between $900 and $1400 a year with a $1000 (or less) deductible on their SRT-10's. Comprehensive deductible would be considerably less (mine is $50). There may be some mileage restrictions to help bring the price down - typically less than 10,000 miles a year will qualify for lower rates. Many use State Farm or American Family and have received very good rates.

Do a search on this site and you will find some good quotes on Vipers, as well as information about the policies, claims, etc.:

You will yield some great discussions like this one:

Good luck, and keep us posted on your purchase!

The gps requirement is nuts. Don't do it. Plenty of people will insure your Viper without installing a "big brother" gps unit in your car.

Try State Farm.

Think the GPS is what LOJAC and others use. You will get a reduction on your rate if you have one of these vehicle locators installed. Not a big deal.

I thought Lojac provided a radio beacon and not GPS. GPS in the hands of an insurance company (or government in general) would be misused to establish if you speed, or other infractions.

Thanks for your responses. I have an absolutely clean driving record for 25 years. No history of problems. I do not like the 5k comprejensive and collision deductabile.....thats ******* crazy ! Certainly I will shop it around to get better rates.

How much is a boomerang system anyway????? Does anyone know?

Thanks again.

GPS is not about recovering stolen vehicles.

GPS is about monitoring how you drive your car.

Here are some sites touting the uses of this technology:

"Traksure is a small rectangular box (about the size of a video cassette) which is fitted to a vehicle. It will be totally hidden. It uses GPS satellite technology to identify what speed a vehicle has been travelling at but more importantly, Traksure can tell what the speed limit was at any given location. This allows us to identify and reward young male drivers who drive within the speed limit and, conversely, take action against those drivers who break the speed limit and in doing so, put themselves and others at risk on our roads."

http://www.axa.ie/car/traksure.html

What if liability premiums were based not on demographics and DMV records but on actual driving habits? That's the idea behind Norwich Union's newest business. In a pilot program launched last year, the British insurer began to track 5,000 customers by placing GPS receivers in the trunks of their cars. Data from the devices will be used to adjust drivers' premiums from month to month. "We calculate everything from speed and acceleration to whether they're braking too early or too late at intersections," says project manager Robert Ledger. So far Norwich Union has collected data on about 1 million journeys, and its statisticians are using the information to recalculate its insurance tables. Next year it will make the technology available to the rest of its 3.5 million auto customers, hoping that the feedback will lead to fewer accidents -- and thus higher profits. "Over time," Ledger says, "we think we can change people's behavior and make them safer drivers."

This is not good. Don't agree to let the insurance company put a gps unit in your car.

Thanks for the information everyone. As for the GPS system, that is absolutely insane. Pretty soon we won't be able to go to the bathroom without someone knowing what the heck we're doing.

We are living in a insane world, where privacy is no longer an option.

Call Bill Pemberton at Woodhouse BEFORE you take the plunge!

My SRT-10 is over 20K miles and feels as tight as the day I got it.
