Does anyone know of an aftermarket antilock brake system which can be retrofitted to 96-2000 GTS cars?

My 2000 GTS has antilock brakes from Archer and they work great. Give them a call and they can hook you up.

"Not worth the coin" - well this depends on what you are going to do with the car.

Is is strictly or primarily a street car? If yes, then maybe ABS is not worth the money.

Is it strictly or primarily a track car? If yes, then I would argue ABS is worth the money. The ability to go into a corner and stomp the pedal knowing you won't lose the car (in fact, the ABS can be used to straighten out the car) and will not lock-up the brakes is huge. Now think about how many tires you won't have worry about flat-spotting... Unless you are a VERY accomplished racer and can brake just as effectively without ABS, you are much better off (i.e. faster) with it.

If the car will be used frequently for both the street and the track, well now you've got a decision to make on how fast you want to be on the track vs. your budget.

just my 2 cents..

Red Sled,

Thanks for the lead. My car has Wilwood 6 piston front and 4 piston rear and I have problems locking up the wheels.

No problem. I've thought about putting the ABS on my 97 as it is driven 95% of the time on the track but I couldn't swallow the $7500 pill. I do agree that having ABS on the track is a definite advantage (there's a reason ABS is on the Comp Coupe)I've resigned myself to practice my threshold braking and flatspotting the occasional tire. If the car is going to be driven on the street I would say that there are better mods to be done for the price. Good luck.

I've been looking for a used ABS set-up for my 2000 GTS.
Even though I've had the brakes up graded, I'd still like to have the dummy mode. Everything I own has ABS, even my motorcycle.

Even with ABS you press on the brakes for maximum effect not stomp on them.Sure ABS prevents lockup when you stomp. But a stomp dips the nose and raises the tail.In that attitude there is no way you are getting maximum brake performance. Bruce

I've got Archers system on my 98 GTS along with Baer 6 piston fronts, stock fronts relocated to the rear and an IPS parking brake.

World class stopping power street, strip and track. And I'd debate Rick - I think ABS is even more valuable for the street, but I'm a novice and not in his class as a driver.

Expensive? Yes. Would I do it again? In a heartbeat.

When I first started racing with an abs car(grand am srt4) I was useing threshold braking, but..... it didnt work & the car was spooky, When I started to get into the abs, i had to do it HARD, once I mashed the pedal, the car settled down & the brakes were much more contollable. There seemed to be a BIG transition between sneeking into the ABS & going into them all out. It was a learning curve. The 2nd part of the equaison was what to do when the ABS was cycling. You have to turn the wheel! the first few times I was hard into the abs the car wasnt really stopping in a shorter distance, but once I got my brain & foot to work together, I would cary the brakes into the turn like I could never do under simple threshold braking.

Joe - I think you make a valid argument for ABS for the street, and I know you're giving me far too much credit as a driver... Pete is the caliber of driver that can provide a better assessment for ABS on the track.

I have had my car on a pretty tight track and braked it pretty hard. I alway felt like the breaks would overheat before the ABS kicked in. I have never used it on the street. I was told to get an 01 so Id have abs but wish I had bought a 99. Id trade ABS for some forged pistons.

Oh well. I now have both. :)

With ABS on the track, with hard braking at the end of a straight and ABS engaged, how is the transition to non-ABS braking if you want to trail brake?
