Hey Folks,

I am trying like a mad man, to pass my Emissions test in good old NC. The problem is, I have ONE **** o2 sensor that my STOCK computer is complaining about not getting warmed up quick enough. I did all the tricks with drill bits and such, but one of them is a persistent problem even with holes enlarged.

SOOOO.. since I could pass with FLYING colors if I was to use the MOPAR ecu that I am borrowing from a friend, then that would be GREAT. The only problem is, that the MOPAR ecu doesnt have MY vin in it, and I would LOVE to get it programmed for my vin.

Any Ideas ??

PS. Dont worry, I am going to ask my friend to sell it to me BEFORE I even think about changing the vin in it, but I need to find out FIRST if this is even an option.

Thanks for your help.

-Jon

Hey Jason,

I was wondering if you KNOW that it works to REPROGRAM a mopar ECU. I know a dealership can take a ****** one and add the vin, but what about one that has someone else's vin in it, aka an old one. Look at my subject I am saying REPROGRAM. I only bring this up, because my viper tech says HE doesnt think that the DRB3 can do that, but he can PROGRAM a ****** one. Is he just clueless ?? Nice guy, but wouldnt be suprised. Let me know. ASAP, I need to pay emissions test, or BIG ticket here I come.

Your tech is correct... once a vin has been entered into the PCM it will not let you enter another vin. I don't see a problem unless you have a skim module for theft protection.... I don't know if that was offered or not for your car. What happens normally is the PCM, TCM, and the BCM all look at each other for info via a data bus line... if the vin #s don't match, it will go in theft. Usually it is on models with VTSS with a BCM that has problems, but a Viper only has a PCM unless it is optioned with SKIM protection... and the skim module uses the vin also. It is possible for both modules to be useless if the two notice that different vins were detected...not all the time, but it is possible. If you have a grey key you have SKIM and if you key is black you have VTSS, that is the easiest way to tell the difference. On all of the older MP PCMs (80's & 90's)the data was so useless I am surprised that it could find a vin or retain it in its memory... maybe things have changed. I haven't tried a new SBEC or JTEC from MP, so anything is possible. It would be a crap shoot on the vin #. I would think the new PCM would make your emission readings worse, not better...it is adding more advance and more fuel trim to the existing program. Hope that helps.
Later,
Joe

Hey Joe,

Thanks, I have now chatted with 3 people (2 of which are certified viper techs) and they all say Jason (from above post), doesnt know what he is talking about. You can NOT REPROGRAM a vin in a mopar ECU, once it has already been programed. Jason joked in an email to me about someone having all the "wrong answers", looks like he knows something about that. Anyway, passing is only a problem because I kick o2 codes, NOT becasue gasses out of the tail pipe are bad. So the mopar ECU is actually much better to pass with, becasue it doesnt kick ANY codes for o2's and cat's on my car.

Jon,

Have you talked to Sean about modifying your O2 sensors? I believe he has a trick to get them to warm up faster. Might be
a better route to solution...

Other John.

Hey John,

Do you read posts completely
grazy.gif
?? lol. Yeah I posted above, that I already did the o2 trick that shawn suggested. I did a "search" and foundf the post about how to drill open the sensors a little bit more. Really, more then anything my viper tech and I found out, that I actually have a BAD o2 sensor that wont HEAT up, i must have burned up the heater somehow, with a short, when I lengthen'd the wires for the new exhaust. Either case, its fried. I gotta get a new o2 sensor. Which *****, becasue the one I blew didnt have 5k on it. oh well.

Anyone got a SPARE, low milage, working, o2 sensor I can have ?
