Just wondering if anyone here has painted the logo under the hood? The one stamped into the under hood lining? Got a little bored today and decided to give it a try. So far, not too so good. Tried to paint it with a paint brush. The paint seems to soak into the lining and doesn't look too good. I'm going to try to mask off the emblem then spray paint it all white, and then hand paint the blue parts. Any tips on this? I'm not very good with artistic/creative things like this. But it did look cool on one I seen recently.

There was a custom paint job done a little while back. (Steel grey originally, most of the car painted yellow with the sills and other trim the original color). The inside emblem was painted yellow to match the outside and it was awesome! It was professionally done. It may have been posted too far back to find in a search. Hopefully the owner sees this post.

Well got it done here's a pic, now if I can only get some more of those black plastic snap things that hold it into place then I'll be all set. Broke half of the darn things trying to remove them

It does look good. Now can you do it in yellow so that I can see how it would look on my car

Since mine is a 93, it has a metal liner where the logo would be. I simply put a red sticker that is 16 in wide, and looks great I think.

MES,

That look freak'in awesome!!! Tell me the exact steps to accomplish the 'painted snake'. I have a silver/blue, and was thinking silver surround and dark blue snake. Everyone give me your suggestions, etc...

P.S. - A red snake may look cool as well, to match the engine and smooth tubes in my car. Opinions?

Edit:

P.S.S. - I was writing this while the red snake above was posted. No, I am not blind.

Viperholics,

Just thought of a cool idea that I'm going to share: Could paint scales on the Viper like the "Viper Club of America" emblem at the top of this page. Could create a template and then spray paint over the snake to create the scales. If it doesn't look right, you could always paint over. Opinions?

COMMERCIAL MESSAGE:

I have sold 2 of these for exactly this same project!

The owners worked at their leisure on the clean, new pad. No oil or road film to prevent effective painting.
Installed it when complete. The pre-sealer-primer was the key.
Mask off, and paint. One used the 5-oz cans of spray color also available in -most- newer Viper colors.

The Viper-embossed pad is only $99 from PartsRack !

Thanks, for all your replies. Here's how I did it and some things/tips to look out for.

1. Started with a regular can of paint (bad idea) and a paint brush. Painted on 2 coats. The paint keep seeping into the liner, and looked terrible. Also it left brush marks and uneven texture. The paint caused the liner to become ruff.

2. After the failed attempt in #1 above I decided to mask off the whole emblem and SPRAY paint (good idea) it all white. This worked out great and provided a nice white background to paint the blue onto. It was hard to get the masking tape to stick to the liner so I had to be careful when spray painting it.

3. I used High Gloss Krylon spray paint for both the white and blue. The blue I hand painted with some paint brushes (the kind used to paint a picture) Sprayed the blue into a glass then painted it on, it went on real nice. The spray paint was a much thinner paint and works MUCH better than regular cans of paint.

4. It looks good standing next to the car and in the picture but if you stick your head up under the hood, some of the over spray and brush marks become noticeable. JonB has a good idea with using a brand new one to paint. I figured it would be something stupid like $500 for the liner being its a Viper part. I may re-do another one some time. Now that I did the first one, I bet the next time it will turn out much better.

5. Total cost about $20 took about 1 hour to get it masked off then 15 min to spray paint it (3 coats at 5 min per coat) then it took about 30-45 min per coat of blue (used 3 coats) then about an hour on the final touch up with the blue and white. This does not include the time for the original failed attempt with regular cans of paint.

It really livens up the engine compartment. Kind of resembles a Viper God looking down on the engine to bless it with lots of torque
