Anyone\'s heater not work?

I just purchased a Red 1997 GTS today with 23k miles on it. The weather was a little chilly on the way home so I turned on the fan and turned the temp knob to as hot as it would go. No heat. It just blows cold air. Any thoughts? I'll take a look and see if I can see anything tomorrow in the daylight.

Re: Anyone\'s heater not work?

Most likely your HVAC control vacuum supply line fell off the right side valve cover. Vacuum is needed to move the ventilation flaps to route air past the heater core; no vaccum = no heat. Look for a small stiffer-material tube (than you would normally see used for vacuum lines) somwhere on the right side of the engine that should be attached to a ****** about 3 inches from the rear of the valve cover.

Both times I spun at the track, the line fell off - never have figured out why that happens, unless its getting positive pressure somehow.

First, congratulations on the purchase and welcome! Next thing, did you also turn the right control knob over toward the right side heater functions (foot, foot/defrost and defrost)? If you turn to the left, it has vent (but no heat) and AC.

Congrats! You will find the Viper's ac/heat is just completely wacked! The ac ONLY blows the dash and crotch vents, while the heat only blows through the crotch vents. Go figure.

The good news? Even if the heater doesn't work, drive harder, it'll warm up quick! :D

Re: Anyone\'s heater not work?

Ahahahahahah, awesome! I love you guys! Here I was worrying that something was terribly wrong and that I'd need to take it to the shop tomorrow. You're exactly right. My hands get cold easily, so I'm used to turning on the heater and vents and warming my hands, so the switch was on the AC side, not on the heater side. Good to know! I'll sleep easier tonight.

Tomorrow I'm taking the day off work to run some errands and get to know the Viper. I can't wait. I feel like it's the night before Christmas or something.

Thanks for the quick replies.

Hope above solves your problem...if not, check coolant in the pressure tank under the hood (AND the overflow bottle in the fascia). If OK, check to see that the cable loop is still properly connected to the water valve located between two segments of heater hose under the hood on the passenger side just behind the plastic HVAC shroud.

Bat took the words right out of my mouth. Roll up your windows and wait...you'll be cracking a window in about 15 mins to cool off :p

Sometimes I find myself driving with my windows down on cold days. It really does get pretty warm in there.

Interesting. I recently purchased a 97 B&W GTS and noticed the same issue when trying to ues the "vent" setting. Good to know it is not a real issue.

Re: Anyone\'s heater not work?

My heater does not work on my 96'. I can see the cable move the heater valve with the hood open, but no hot air from any of the vents. As I've removed the cats, now it gets pretty chilly in the winter without my side heaters.

A friend suggested to blow some water from my garden hose through the heater core to see if it's plugged up. Any other suggestions??

Any how toos on how to replace the heater core if it's the culprit? BTW looked up a replacement heater core (for a 97, as they didn't show one for a 96, should be the same right?) at makeitmopar.com, and the bloody thing is $185!

Thanks,
Cal

Did you check my posting (second one in the thread) about the HVAC vaccuum line? Its the same on the Gen I and Gen II engines.
