Application of Clear Bra Question . . .

I was scoping out a 2004 SRT-10 for the application of the Clearbra-brand protective film (like 3M, XPel, but thicker and is applied not in pre-cut sheets but is custom cut and fitted to the car). I plan to have the entire hood, front fascia and front fenders forward of the doors covered. I would also have the lower "sill" section (the section below the doors from the side exhaust to the panel where the "Viper SRT-10" logo is attached." I would then have the side mirrors covered, the fuel filler door (I live in Oregon where there is no self-serve gasoline and gas attendants have a habit of scratching, slamming and abusing the fuel door), the small door handle panels (that you touch and depress when opening the door), and the entire reaar bumper shhort of the trunk covered.

My question is this: I was not planning on having the door panels themselves covered as the doors seem fairly well recessed because of the side cowl design of the car. ( I would be ordering a black car and short of covering the entire door covering only the lower half of the door would create a visible "line" where the film left off.) Moreover, having the lower sill covered seems like it would address any gravel kicked up by the tires. Have owners noticed any chipping of the doorpanels above the sill?

Second, when you open the doors, I notice the side sill area (where the heat warning sticker is attached) is also quite wide. Can you safely Clearbra this area or is the heat so great that it could, in your opinion, damage the film?

Thanks so much for your input.

/Rich

Oh and yes, I was raised in a household where my folks put covers (not the clear plastic kind) on the furniture ... :)

The goal of protecting your car from road debris is admirable. But, holy cow! You may as well wrap the car in bubble wrap and never take it out of the garage. Perhaps having a little paint work done from time to time to clean up road scars is a better solution.

That said, the sills really do need something to protect 'em. They are designed such that they get sandblasted instantly, regardless of how careful you try to be. In fact, people on this board have posted that they intend to have protective film applied to the sills and I'm waiting to see a post from them about the results. If something seems to work, then I'll have my sills repainted and a film applied.

Go for it (except maybe the doors). I've done it and don't have any nicks yet, and the sill covering seems to be holding up pretty well. You might want to also consider behind the rear wheels.

There are always those that try to convince you that what you want to do is overboard, but if you want to do it, do it. Matter of fact, there are many high end car owners that wrap their whole car.

You better use this stuff though -- http://www.clearbra.net/home2.html

My question is can you see the stuff when its on? I mean will the pannels look off color from one another? How long before the sun kills the pannels? Sounds like a good idea to me. There is nothing i hate more then riding in the fast lane and gettting major rocks hitting the front right after a street cleaner cleans the center of the freeway... That is the only thing on earth that can make me cry.

I would bet that major heat of the sill will make the adhesive melt, but who knows. Give it a try.

I have Autobahnd coating to the front end, head lights, fog lights, door handles and lower front fenders and side sills. There is no heat problem only a need to wipe the scuff marks off the sill with area with adhesive remover (GooGone or Goof Off)occasionally. It looks great on Silver and is not noticeable after 2250 miles. Bob S :usa:

Bob,

I haven't heard of Autobahn coatings, but if you have the stuff on your side sills and it works without yellowing, I'd like to find out more about it. Do you have a web address or other contact info? Thanks.

Talk to Ryan at Ultrashield. He does the 3M and ships them nationwide. I love mine!
www.ulra-shield-phoenix.com or 602-694-6979.

I E-mailed Ultra Shield and it turns out they don't do the sills. That is the most important part of the car (or at least the most vulnerable), so without that there isn't much point to using them.

I'll contact 'em again then. They may have had enough requests for the sills that they decided to do them.
