Well it looks like my car has an oil leak! I don't ever see oil on my garage floor but the underside of the car, a few hoses, etc. are defenetly covered with it. Is this type of thing common? Anyone else have any problems with oil leaks?

I don't think that they are that common at all on the SRT-10. Now consider that your oil was very recently changed (assume this was done when your exhaust was workd on). While the oil filter is more accessible that previous Vipers (less mess), it would not be surprising to still see some oil in that area from the change or even filling. Look very carefully and see if you actually have oil residue above the filter area and then try to pinpoint the origination. Otherwise just clean up what you see and watch for reappearance. Nothing to get excited about just yet, especially with nothing on the floor of your garage.

Chris,
I saw the oil leak prior to getting it changed. I went ahead with an oil change anyways. Also the oil is not coming from where the filter is. Too bad I don't know my car stuff but its coming from a big silver block under the car about 1/2 a foot down from where the oil filter is. I think its coming from the oil lines up there! Wonder if someone has an underbody picture so I can circle what area the oil is at! If you flash a light into the area you can see that oil was all over it from the shine. My mechanic did clean some of it off and then I told him to stop when I remembered I should take it in for warrenty work!

I've had a few of my vipers spring a leak. Warranty will fix them.

The oil pan gasket usually leaks. This is where some of Chryslers enginering is a bit behind. GM cars were plaugued with leaks for many years until they designed a better oil pan gasket, and boy did they. The new oil pan gasket is a work of art, and never leaks, not to mention it's reusable. They also enginered a sealant, it's called the Right Stuff, under the Permatex name, that is space age quality. Really I think Federal Mogul, and the Permatex corps helped them with this, as they sell these products today.

As inovative and creative as Chry. are, they seem to be in the dark ages on many things. That oil leak in my 04 SRT cost them nearly a full day's labor to fix.

If the dealership is using a gasket sealant other than the above mentioned, I would request they use this, or supply it for them. You will never have another leak.

I just took my 97 in for some work, and they told me that I had an oil leak. (I knew that). They said this was due to the porosity of the oil pan, and the oil was leaking from the pan itself, and was covered under warranty.

Do your newer cars have oil pans made of the same porous material too? (I am assuming it is Aluminum). It could be this if they do. ????

Were they saying Chry. doesn't know how to machine out a piece of cast aluminum, or it was a defective pan.The pan may have had a porous area in it, as a defect, and any good sealant should have stopped that. Cast aluminum oil pans have been out for decades, and allways provide better sealing, than a steel pan. Very easy to cast and machine this material, especially an oil pan, and no weigt or cost savings with this pan, so sealing is the main advantage, and maybe a little bit torsional ridgidity for the block.

Most cars are going to this type of pan.

This is my 3rd oil leak in 5 months....and 5k miles. I took the first two in for warranty work. Now it's leaking again. It smells like transmission though, not oil. It's upfront where the skip shift harness is. I discovered the leak when I installed it last week.

i am not sure skip. i ran over something a number of months ago, and cracked the pan. they replaced it with a new one and then came my leak shortly thereafter. with the car in for maintenance now, they called and in the simplest words, just said that the pan was leaking in a spot due to its porosity. they told me it was covered under warranty, and was being replaced. i am sinply taking their word for it. i was due for an oil change soon anyway. :2tu:
