Are you Gen III guys unofficially calling the 2008 a Gen III+, Gen III.5 or Gen 3.5? Guess it does not matter too much until there is a 2009 model that is the same as the 2008, but hey, its the Internet, you need a catchy abbreviation.

I vote for Gen III.5

The 08 owners would never settle for the moniker "Gen 3.5", just like the Gen 2 guys would have never settled for a Gen 1.5. Rememeber all the technical advances of the 08 underneath the body...it is definitely a Gen IV.

The Gen IV uses 05 and 06 technology, remember, our beloved Gen 3's have technology over half a decade old.

While I don't really care that much which Gen you call it, if it is not a Gen3, Then the Corvette is in about its 30th generation not 6th. A new engine and hood wouldn't seem to qualify as even a half generation.

In Corvette terms:

C1 single headlight 6 cyl
C2 single headlight V8
C3 '56 new body
C4 '57 fuel injection There was a switch to the 283 somewhere after '55
C5 '58 new body
C6 '59 new hood
C7 '61 new body
C8 '52 side stainless eliminated and new engine
C9 '63 new body
C10 '64 new hood, higher HP engine
C11 '65 new hood, body mods, new BB engine L88 new engine somewhere after 65
C12 '67 new hood, body mods
C13 '68 new body
C14 '69 body mods, new (350) engine
C15 '70 body mods, new (454) engine
C16 '73 lost chrome front bumper body mods
C17 '75 lost rear chrome bumper body mods, new (worse) engines
C18 '78 new fastback body
C19 '80 new body

And this is ONLY through what is generally considered the first 3 generations of Corvettes!

I was also thinking about this in terms of the Vette comparison.

C4 had five different engines ranging from 205hp to 405hp but they were all C4's.

we aint not stinking corvette... but that being said..

Interior is identical (dont call color options a different interior, its just a different color and thats IF you pay for that 'upgrade')... so like I said same interior, same suspension (ok maybe new shocks?? but same a arms, suspension points, anti sway bars?? are they the same?, same rotors, same brake calipers, im sure same brake pads, same frame, 95% same body panels (only hood different), same head lights/markers, same emblem, same side exit exhaust (although diff exhaust system). Too much of it is the same short of the engine and drive line for me to embrace the gen 4 designation. Doesnt mean its NOT a gen 4, as concensus is that it IS. Just means I'm following along, but passive aggressive ;-)

I have two Corvette convertibles '61 and '69. I built the '61 from a $900 hulk and I have replaced or reworked everything on my '69 except the frame and gas tank. I have driven my '69 145,000 (since '76) and the '61 37,000 miles (since '79 although the rebuild took 7 years), so yes I am a Corvette guy from way back. They didn't make Vipers when I got out of college in '77 and pre-federalized Corvettes WERE an unparalleled performance value.

HOWEVER, I LOVE my '04 Viper which I bought new in '05 and have driven it over 27,000 miles - note that I am in IA deep in the snow belt so I don't drive year around. I drive it almost daily to work when there is no salt on the roads - although I do alternate occationally with the 2 Corvettes and my '68 Impala convertible.

As I like high HP convertibles, GM has YET to build a corrosion proof convertible with a manual transmission that outperforms my modified '69 Corvette. They CLEARLY haven't built one that comes close to a Gen 3 Viper.

I also think the Viper is light years ahead of the new Corvettes in styling and clearly, in convertibles, power.

I would have had a Viper sooner had they been full convertibles before the Gen3 series.

So I am a classic Corvette and modern Viper guy. I know most Viper owners don't drive theirs as often or as far as I do, so I can take any barbs anyone might throw because I also have Corvettes........

I would call it the SL Vipers (GEN-III and GEN-III.5) compared to the SL Vipers (GEN-I and -II).

Easier to remember!

After driving my blue/white '08 convert for more than 200 miles, I'm calling it a gen IV. It is so much different from my '05 that, aside from exterior appearances, there is enough change to merit calling it a gen. IV. If others don't know which way to call it, they need to drive the car first, then decide which number to pin on it. The clutch, the tires, the engine, exhaust rumble and the fit and finish seem adequate to change generations, in MHO. But to each his own; you decide for yourself. Dodge is calling it Gen. IV, and I am, too. Drive it a while and see if you agree! :)

Gen IV...

Gen I was an RT/10 only the became a gen II with engine mods & some body redesign, addition on the GTS. RT/10 looks very similar between gen I & GenII. So I say GenIV...I also say bad-*** if the first run was an 11.34 in the 1/4!:drive:
