asking price on my RT/10

I've enjoyed my viper a lot over the last few years, but it won't be practical for me anymore. Right now I'm asking $37800 for my car in excellent condition, with the hardtop included, and 36500 miles on it. Is that a reasonable price?

I think so. Once you dip into the 30s most of what is out there is Gen 1 cars. Your mods are the popular ones and don't hurt the value. The mileage is high but I think your price reflects that. A $37000 98 with 15k miles would have a story of some kind behind it.
Make sure you are advertised in your local auto trader.

So I'd say your price is good. Hang onto it for another year and maybe I'll buy it.

That is a really really good price. Good luck with the sale. At that price, I would be surpirised if you have it after a week, let alone after a month.

If your car is truly in excellent condition, you're leaving money on the table at that price. I'd ask 41 or 42. If someone tries to beat you up too much on price, I'd then negotiate it without the hardtop. Since your car is red, you should have no trouble finding a buyer for the hardtop (especially if it's factory).

If I didn't have other more important priorities in my life right now, I'd just keep the viper. Maybe i'll just keep it anyway. It seems like everyone completely freaks out when they hear it has 36k miles on it, even though it runs perfectly. It doesn't even matter that it's always been serviced, people still want to rip me off because it's a "high mileage" car now. The cash would definitely help me now, but I also can't allow myself to get ripped off.

I too would bump the price to $40K. A low asking price will churn up cheapskates that will just drive you nuts with questions and stupidly low offers.

Not to mention I personally (selfishly) don't want to see any Gen II cars selling in the 30's please!

I know exactly what your talking about. I recently sold my NSX with high mileage. I thought I'd lower the price to a very, very competetive price. This only brings out tire-kickers and young punks wanting joy rides (since the price was now in their "affordability demographic"). It's thin line, priced too low, you'll get a bunch of low-ball offers and people wasting your time, priced too high and you'll have to wait a long ass time.

Asking prices are not selling prices. Some people who are asking what seems to be a more than fair price end up sitting on their cars for months. It took me 8 months to sell my 03 Z06 and I watched the internet and dealer prices the whole time to make certain I was always on the low end. I think you ask what you are prepared to take.
I never had a whole bunch of tire kickers. Four test drives and I was with them so they never beat on it. There aren't a whole bunch of people who will pay 40k for an 8 year old car.
You want to get the best possible price but look at it this way. Somebody who has a top end budget of $35000 will probably not look at a car priced at 40k but they may well call on your $37800 car hoping to weasel you down. Instead, the car hooks them and when they find out you won't move they scrounge up another couple of thousand to make the deal. You pull them up instead. You just need to get them to look at the car and their resolve and judgement will melt. Nothing says you have to move off of your bottom line and you want as many possible buyers interested as possible.

I'm with Nuck. When I sell something, I rarely have it over a week. I sell it as a good deal but tell the tirekickers that the price is non-negotiable. Why play games? As mentioned before, I sold a motorcycle for $25k halfway around the world (Australia) in 45 min. on ebay. Yeah, I may have left a few bucks on the table, but some of you guys that go for retail and deal with the gazillions of tire kickers and keep the car for months are very different from me. Price it right, be firm and sell it quick.

I realize I'm just a Noob around here, but I'm in the target demographic that would be looking for a viper. In my mind, a GTS would surprise me at less than 40K but an RT/10, even a Gen II RT/10, is expected to bring a little less. People group the RT/10's together for the most part. Its not a Gen I, but most potential buyers won't know all the differences unless they've studied some books or looked around for a while. With that in mind, I think 37,500 is a good firm price - just don't drop lower than that. It should be a breeze to sell.

I might make some people mad on here, but I've been lurking for a little while, and it seems to me that if you come to the Viper Club board full of Viper owners who naturally want to see the value of their car increase, you're just asking for the knee ****, "No! that's way too low! Go up on the price!" response. Look at the market closely. AutoTrader online, etc... Don't take too much Viper Board pricing advice, as there's a definite conflict of interest going on....

Chuckdoc, I think you would be suprised at how informed new Viper buyers are, I see alot of people looking to buy asking questions on the board and most anyone here is willing to help them out.
A Viper is a large enough purchase to most of us that we have planed and researched for a long time before ever getting in the market to buy. I know I looked for a full year before purchasing mine.
Andy I agree that your car should be more in the forty thousand range, I think the market will bare that especially now that spring is here.

My asking prices are always very close to my selling prices, and oftentimes the same - Simply because I price things for what they are worth, and then I **** out tire kickers and serial [******] artists.

I'm telling you, price it too low and you'll get nothing but headaches. Price it right, let the more knowledgeable buyer do the calling, and then sell it for a fair price.

Andy 98, First, let me say you will forever regret it if you sell. Getting another one like it later even at the same price will mean you have to pay taxes again at the DMV. I am not sure of taxes in Michigan but I paid $4k in taxes and title fees for a $49k Viper in 2004. Everybody you know will ask you where it went after you sell it. There are also numerous other reasons for you to keep but would be too off topic.

Second, If you sell, condition of your snake is much more important on your 36k mile snake. Vipers as Chuck 98 has shown, are very desireable and reliable even after 100k miles. Putting fresh rubber on and having a good paint shop fix any rock chips will pay off in a higher selling price. $40k for your Viper in excellent or better condition is very reasonable.

Whatever YOUR "best" judgement, and YOUR "gut" feeling tells you to do, is the best indicator. Do not be persuaded by above posts telling you that you are making a mistake by selling it.

You know your priorities and your situation best, thus your orig. post about selling your RT/10. Everyone will always give their opinion about pricing and such. Sometimes this board is helpfull, and other times it is pointless.

I took some of your advice and decided to put it up on ebay. I was amazed with the amount of lowball offers i was getting before then, and stuff like "would you like to trade for my 1970 cuda" or "trade for my harley davidson".

Now that it's on ebay people seem to at least be getting serious about it.

I am glad you went with my advice...I have a TON of EBAY experience and Car Sales experience in general...as I bought an sold cars in my past life, auctions, dealers, etc., and I literally watch auctions every single day expecially on Vipers, just out of curiosity. Wait and see the final bid price. You will get a minimum of what you want. Plus today is the first day of spring. Certainly won't hurt the bids!!!
