Yep, just got off of the phone with the Audit supervisor who informed me that any plate with ASP will be rejected. I just sent in a request for personalized plates with 2 choices: "SLOWASP" and "SLO ASP". My car will remain stock for a while, so to me, it will be slow. Once I start with some nice mods, I had planned on getting "FASTASP". She said it was all up to the computer and the computer would not acceot any plate with "ASP", period. End of discussion. I know I've seen "ASP" on plates in other states, but I live in TN. :( I started to ask if "FUH Q" would be OK, but my cooler head prevailed.

Thanks for letting me vent.

That's because TN likes to promote itself as a Bible belt state and it would not be nice to use the word a$$. They are so religious...probably why they have one of the highest divorce rates in the country! They have their screening computer setup to reject any word that could be interpreted to mean a$$. The other problem is that people in TN are stupid and don't know that an asp is a snake and instead will think you are inferring a$$.

Tell them that ASP stands for Active Server Pages and you are a programmer. I have "ROBS ASP" in Florida.

I was laughing my ass off when devil dog posted. I had actually deleted a comment about living in the bible belt in my original post. I already explained that ASP is a snake, and the car is a Viper. She said she knew I was not trying to get a ****** tag, but if the computer says no, they can't issue the plate. I brought up the fact that other states allow ASP when being used in a non-****** manner, and she quickly pointed out that I resided in the state of TN and have abide by the state laws.

In California I couldn't get NAKD PUT a stock trading term. I asked if SHRT PUT would work, but it was the word PUT that was the issue. They did say I could do MRNWOOD

I did CATS VPR instead.

Could be. Then again, I hear tell that some of them know the difference between inferring and implying.

***? LOL Like I said before, I am not trying to get away with something here. Hmmm, wonder if SLOWA5P would be approved by the computer?

You need to point them out to me then. I guess my gripe should be with the computer, and not the people there. I could understand if I was actually trying to say ass, but I'm not. To me, my car is slow. My friend's Z06 would walk circles around me and about every other nice car in the Nashville area. Considering my Viper has just an exhaust, I consider it to be slow for now. I just thought I would get a few laughs by having SLOWASP for a little while and then switch to FASTASP.

I believe either word could be utilized in this context, however, implying would probably be the better choice. :D

I've been asked at least a dozen times what an asp is, because of my tag.

I recently tried to get plates in CA with ASP in them, and they denied them several months later, after the DMV online computer accepted it, they must be tightening up out here too lately.

Not sure of everything, but it has a F1SC. He had a D1SC, but went to the F1 to squeeze a little more hp out. I know there are lots of cars on this site that could take him, but haven't seen any local that could. Sure, there are lots of local "drag cars" and "race cars" here locally that could, but I'm mainly referring to newer cars that have no problem as a daily driver. He did race 1Tony1 when he had the D1. When Tony "found" his gear, he walked away.

You probably couldnt get FASTASP because I have it!!! Sorry!

Uh-Oh. I told her I had seen several cars around Nashville with ASP on their plates(Cobras, Vipers, and a Shelby!), and she said they were aware and letters may soon be mailed out. Yep, she said "may". I didn't press her for more info, as she had already said if the computer would not accept it, they could not override the decision. I guess I can understand, because a person who wants to get "ASPHOLE" would complain that I have "SLOWASP", even though I have no bad intentions whatsoever. :(

In Maryland I had BAD ASP on my Viper and KIKGAS on my Harley.

I've written about this before, but a bunch of years ago when I first applied for "KIKGAS" it was rejected by the MVA because it was perceived as "offensive to the general public". I decided to fight it and tried to find a lawyer to help (no luck there) or one of the motorcycle advocacy groups (ABATE) and no luck there.

I finally turned to the ACLU (believe it or not) and they said they would take the case. The year before they had fought the Maryland MVA over the issue of a special license for the Sons of the Confederacy (and won). Maryland at first rejected their application for a special tag because it was deemed racist. The ACLU won that case.

Anyway, the ACLU wrote a pretty good letter to the head of the MVA citing freedom of expression issues and pointed out that even George HW Bush had used the expression "Kick Ass George" as part of his campaign. Reluctantly the MVA backed down (and sent a pretty nasty letter to the ACLU) and I was granted the tag. My story made the front page of the local paper and also was part of a front page Wall Street Journal article. I never figured I would have some common ground with the ACLU.

Actually, I've done a lot of good things in my life and I cringe a little at the thought of the notoriety I received from such an insignificant issue.

Maybe this approach will work for you.

I can't imagine asp not being allowed. Bring a dictionary and let them tell you why a normal word with no negative connotation would be disallowed, especially when a connection to the car is clear (type of viper snake and Viper, duh!). Course I may be biased.

Gary: Thanks alot man! I may give the ACLU a try. First, I am going to see who else I can talk to higher up the food chain at the DMV. Hopefully someone will put "ASP" and "snake" together and figure out a connection.
