At what RPM do I shift through the six speeds?

I've been told it safe to about 15,000 RPM but so far I keep mine down it the high 5,000 range. Good luck and enjoy your

Huff and puff as much as possible but I don't think you could reach 15,000 rpm. Maybe with your chain saw. I don't know the burst speed of the flywheel, clutch and pressure plate but I would be willing to bet they would become part of your floorpan before 15,000.

For reference I would check the archives for break-in procedure. Once beyond break-in anything below fuel shut-off applies but engine speeds near redline will not improve performance. I believe shifts in the neighborhood of 5700 to 5800 give the best performance, but the year and add-ons matter.

i cannot undestand how some people have a viper and know _nothing_ about it. 15k rpms is not realistic. at all. i am about to purchase titanium rods, rockers and the whole valvetrain thingie and i was told that i cant spin any faster than 10k rpms because the car will flip sideways from the twisting momentum of the engine. to counter that i was recommended a set of magic motor mounts that are supposed to keep the engine in place and lessen the momentum. i am still debating if this is a sound solution though...

btw, in 1st and 2nd gear wots- is the tach inertial and if it is by how much?

Frank Parise and Erik Messlwey did a thread on this board a couple of years ago. In reality, the shift point may well vary on the gears involved. It is my understanding that you are attempting to have the torque level after the shift still fall within the Viper's thankfully wide peak torque band. Shifting at 5,500 is a decent rule of thumb. If you can get to a dyno, try some runs in second, third and fourth to see where the flat part of the curve is. On my car, in fourth, it is from 3,600 to about 4,600.

In the meantime, follow a conservative break in procedure. Good things come to those who wait !

Durango Viper,

Here are the shift points for optimum acceleration based on the two main shift point theories using data from a stock '01 GTS dyno run:

Same HP before and after the shift method: 1-2 shift at 6200 rpm, 2-3 and 3-4 shifts at 6050 rpm.

Maximum area under the horsepower curve method: 1-2, 2-3, and 3-4 shifts all at 6300 rpm.

Note: I rounded these numbers to the nearest 50 rpm.

Have fun.
