Look at your finish under a florescent light...Hold the light over a body panel, and look at an angle...Got fine scratches in your clear coat?

I actually read the Zaino instructions. duh!

In short I noticed that the Z2 really gave me a better shine/wet look than the Z5.

I think that the best results (it only makes sense) are obtained by following instructions.

Those instructions would be to put 2 or 3 coats of Z5 on finishing each of with the Gloss Enhancer. Then the last coat should be Z2 followed by the gloss enhancer.

IMHO this is a heck of a lot of work but the results are staggering.

<'76 5' 10 Supermodel blonde cup holder!!!!!!! >
Okay Maui, I mentioned something about my wife causing an occasional disruption and I was forced to provide a photo. You can't tempt us with your cup holder comment without giving us a peep at your supermodel. Come on, give it up.

Snake Bitten, light shows small water spots.
Should I use glass cleaner to wipe clean, before Zanio? Zanio is not abrasive. When I tried it small water spots stayed. Some one mentioned white vinegar was good for spots. I want the finsh perfect, since I put so much time in the clay/cleaner step.

Bad Byte, yes it is a lot of work!

Gerald, I will have to send you a very private email!

What's this clay business? Sounds like it'd scratch the hell out of one's paint. In what case is such a thing needed?

Use 3M Perfect-It III Show Car Finishing Glaze to remove your water spots...You can use it by hand, only use foam pads...Then apply several coats of Z5 over the next few days, with Z6 in between coats...then Z2 and z6 from then on...Don't consider this as "work", but rather a "workout"!

Microfiber towels are the *******...nothing but microfiber touches my finish...Sounds like you're shooting for the WET LOOK!

Let's see the finished project in your new scenery!!!

FinalGTS...3M Finesse It II Finishing Material will remove swirl marks/fine scratches...3M also has a Swirl Remover, but it's the same thing as the Finesse It II...Only use foam pads...Believe it or not, our clearcoat is very soft...and scratches easily, even with cotton applicators, because people tend to "rub" on polish and was with too much pressure...It's alot of work to remove these by hand, you need HEAT to remove a scratch, My RT is black, so I have alot of experience keeping up with scratchs/swirls...and my finish ROCKS!

Griot's Garage sells some nice foam applicators that work well by hand, kind of spendy, but you could easily check them out online, then go find a similiar product locally...

Maui...The whole Perfect It series is a newer formula, Imperial Hand Glaze has been around forever and is an old favorite...You can use Zaino right over either glaze, no problem...I use Zaino too...have for years, but Zaino does not sell a product that will remove water spots, and I work at Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing (3M).

Get some quality Microfiber towels too, and a California Duster...

So said monnieh

Gerald, can you buy finesse It at local stores?

YES! You can typically find this locally, usually at NAPA...and very easy to find online...

Your ACR is obviously black...which, as you know, will show any and every scratch/swirl/imperfection...If you have more than a few, trying to rid yourself of these by hand is nearly impossible...As I previously mentioned, to remove any imperfection from your clear coat, you must have heat...Generating enough heat by hand can be difficult...ie...hard damm work!

I use a Porter Cable 6" Random Orbital Buffer, with the velcro conversion kit for 6" Foam pads...cutting, polishing, and finishing pads...You could STAND on this buffer at the highest RPM setting and not burn your paint...It's perfect for amatures like me! Every winter, I remove all imperfections aquired over the summer...This winter it took me about three full days to remove them all...For your Black ACR, I recommend using 3M Perfect It II Machine Glaze for Dark Colored Cars...Works amazingly well, with a random orital buffer on black!

Best price I have found on the Porter Cable was at Amazon.com and I got the velcor kit and still get all my foam pads at www.topoftheline.com
I don't use wool or cotton pads on my finish...Just foam pads, and microfiber towels...I like the Ultra Microfibers from http://www.pakshak.com/

Snake, I used the 3M line (the old line, the swirl remover and the imperial glaze for dark cars). I havent tried Zaino and was waiting to run out of the 3m stuff before buying. Now you have me wanting to stick with the 3m stuff. One thing, my car is black also and has a million swirl marks (or more!). Doesn't using the swirl mark remover actually take a little of the clear coat off every time you use it? I know it's supposed to "fill" the marks and make the light less reflective, but, i was reading somewhere that it also slowly wears through the clear coat. I actually was thinking of getting the clear coat re sprayed. Not even sure if that's possible. I'm an amateur with the buffers but maybe I will try the porter cable one out. The 3M stuff is great but harder than heck to get off and looking good. I seem to smear it at the very end of the removal process. Gotta try those microfiber towels. Any particular size you recommend? Thanks, Bill

Z5 does very little, I didn't have much luck with it. When I decided to refinish my Viper I tried the Z5 and I saw really no difference. Seems the previous owner just ate it up with sfcratches using the wrong kind of towels and circular wipeing.

I bought a DeWalt variable speed orbital buffer (fine machine), not a variable orbit machine. Using 3M swirl mark remover and special foam pads my Viper looks like glass. Don't be upset if your swrils don't come out because sometimes they have to be removed mechanically.

The Z5 is okay for very fine scratches but it will not remove years of swirl marks that most people have ground into their clear coat.

I use Z5 now just to maintain every now and then but I Z2 it every weekend becasue I got addicted to Zaino. I also use ABSOLUTELY no cloth on the car at all, except for the Zaino plush applicator pads.

I remove all Zaino with a microfiber cloth that is manufactured by Dupont. They are called Dupont Sontara polish detail cloths (product number E-4145) and they come in packs of 50. THese cloths are fantastic and it takes about 3 to remove Z2 from the entire car and about 2 for Z6.
The 3M swril mark remover and the cloths are only available at Amotive paint supplier shops (at least around here anyway as they are commercial products and NOT retail).

After I clayed my car I washed it with Z7 carwash and after drying (california water blade and synthetic chamois)I immediatly wipe down with Z6, then apply Z2, following up with Z6.

My Viper is a different car and the paint is outstanding. I hope you gain something from this post.

Hey Doc,

The Porter Cable 6" Random Orbital is idiot proof...Exhibit A: me! GET THE VELCRO wheel kit! Use higher speeds (5500 rpm) to remove the swirls with the YELLOW foam pads from topoftheline...You wanna apply pressure, but letting the buffer do most of the work, working 2' x 2' areas at a time...Slow motions with the buffer until the product "breaks down", and then move the buffer faster to obtain the high gloss...a little pratice and you'll be a pro! Practice on your daily driver, or the wifey's car!!!!

For you....with ALOT of swirls, use 3M Perfect It II FINE CUT Rubbing Compound (the liquid)...with the YELLOW foam pad...Knock down most of them with the FCRC, then finish it off with the 3M Perfect-It III Show Car Machine Glaze for Dark Colored Cars...with the BLACK foam pad...with a lower speed on the buffer (4000 rpms) but moving the buffer a little faster than with the FCRC....If you have ALOT of them, it will take you a few days...but it will be well worth it...

A little about "rubbing compounds"...this phrase typically scares "the heck" out of your average enthusiast, but don't let it...To remove scratches you flat out need heat...but you also need an (and I hate to use this word, but here goes) "abrasive"...the 3M products utilize glass...Microscopic glass beads, that "break down" even further with heat, pressure, and of course the buffing action in general...So don't let the Fine Cut compound ***** you...Its such a mild abrasive, it's idiot proof...again...check me out!!!

Our vipers have three coats of clear...so it would take YEARS of buffing out swirls to get into trouble...But you can have additional clear coats shot, if you have a body shop you trust...But I am confident you can obtain the desired results with the 3M stuff...You can do this!

Then start in with the Zaino treatments...one coat of Z1...a few coats of Z5...with Z6 in between each coat...and then Z2 or Z5 from then on with Z6 in between each coat...Using foam applicators and the Ultra Microfiber 16" x 16" towels from ThePakShack...

Let us know how you make out :)

Quote from Sal.....at www.zainobros.com
Sal,
Will products like, Perfect It or Imperial hand Glaze work with your
products?

Zaino Show Car Polish is 99.9% optically perfect. Do not put anything under

or on top of Zaino polish except Zaino. This would defeat the whole purpose
of
my product.

Using Meguiars Show Car Glaze, Imperial Hand glaze or any other glaze
before using Zaino is a total waste
of time...

Glazes are loaded with oil to temporarily camouflage scratches and swirls.
So
in actuality all you are doing is putting oil on your paint finish. Oil
will
not let Zaino bond to the paint surface... The oil must be wash off when
you
prepare the paint for Zaino...

Imperial hand glaze is old technology, that was formulated for lacquer and
enamel paints. It is not optically clear and will leave a film on the paint

surface. Not only will this detract from the Zaino optical clarity. But the

3M product will not let Zaino properly bond to the paint surface.

So said Sal from Zaino Bros

Exactly, and if you have swirls/scratches/imperfections...Zaino definitely shows these off...

Unless you want to fill/hide those unsightly swirls/scratches/imperfections...

Not sure what kind of "oil" Sal is refering to...I can tell you these products contain petroleum distilates...but they are lighter ends...not exactly oil...they were "distilled" out of oil and refined...

So said Sal from Zaino Bros

Imperial hand glaze is old technology, that was formulated for lacquer and
enamel paints.

This is true...the new 3M lines are Perfect It II, and newest is Perfect It III...

Now then...Sal's product is amazing...I use it all the time...Especially Z6...I think I am sending Sals kids to college, just in Z6!!! But if your finish is not prepped to near perfection, Zaino will AMPLIFY your imperfections...ask any Sapphire or Black viper owners...

Here's proof that you can use Zaino over a glaze...Wonder how much "clarity" I am loosing?!? I report, you decide!...I gotta quit watching so much FOX NEWS!!! :)

Who else has the "wet" look?!? Post em up!!!!
