I was driving last night for a bit, and attempted to downshift and there was a backfire. To say it gave me a scare is a understatement. Is this normal at all? Do I need to worry about this?

It'si NOT normal.
I'm sure many here can assist you in hnting down the problem.
If you are worried about it too much, then I would suggest.
Call one of our Local Viper Gurus and ask them for some helpful advice.

wastntim,

do you have cats on the car?? I have a Roe blower on mine, and if I am running hard, on decel, i get some nice sized flames out both sides of the car, along with a pretty good pop(no cats on my car)!!

Check plugs/wires, see if one cat is getting substantially hotter than the other (stuck injector, loose wire, etc.?)

I'm a relatively new Viper owner too, but those are all easy things to rule out, even if I'm way off base.

There has to be unburn't gas in the exhaust and the cats are igniting it. As already mentioned the sources of the unburnt fuel can be:

a. bad plug - pulling the plugs should indicte which cylinder.
b. loose or bad plug wire - same diagnosis as above.
c. Leaking injector - find a viper tech.

These are the obvious, pulling the plugs should give you the answer if this condition has existed so some time.

good luck

Isn't a popping noise normal under backpressure? I would also think that it would be different that a backfire.

My car pops some (totally stock) when I downshift around town but I was under the impresion that it was normal. How do you tell if an injector is bad?

A popping noise is normal, upon deacceleration the injectors stay open a small amount to cool (??)the valves, what is not normal is when large amounts of fuel enter the exhaust and ignite, that is a back fire. It can be as simple as a bad plug that does not fully burn the fuel, the fuel accumulates in the cat and boom.

my car pops and gurgles like mad on decel but a backfire is a loud boom like a gun going off, different ballpark
