I'm missing what would probably be the most important screw of all: the one that is upper, inboard transverse screw that fastens both the battery cover and the inner fender to the frame.

It is missing - in fact, it almost looks like it was never installed since there is barely any registration of the screw washer on the battery panel.

The hole in the frame looks like about 1/4"

I'm guessing the hole is not threaded and that one of those semi-self-tapping screws is used there - they have a thread that is basically a sheet metal screw. The ones I am familiar with have the thread spiral to a point even if a very large hole/pitch diameter - I have seen them with as big as 5/16" threads. (I don't know if it could be a self-tapping machine thread - I would think the metal is not thick enough for that.)

I'd like to get that screw installed but would like to not damage the hole in the frame.

Thanks
Tom

Ah, a push pin! Never thought of that.

I found what looked like a 1/4" self tapping machine screw with a flange head and it seemed to tap just fine.

There was a lot of mismatch in mine and I hope the screw does not crack that tab on the battery panel. Maybe when I'm in NAPA I'll find a nice replaceable push pin and take the bolt out.

Thanks so much!
Tom
