Had my battery on tender for a few days, went to go out today and it was stone dead and the battery
was very hot.

Maybe the battery shorted out?

It is virtually impossible for a low amperage trickle charger to significantly heat a working Viper-sized battery, so your guess is probably correct. I've seen significant heating from a 25-amp charger, but not from a 1-to-2 amp tender. Something is seriously amiss in that battery (plate-to-plate short) OR there is a short external to the battery that pulled very high current from it. I would do some voltage checks and see what the battery voltage is with no charger and with the charger connected (~12.6V no charger, good battery/ a few tenths higher ~13.2V with a trickle charger connected). Most likely, the old battery has at least one shorted cell and will measure low (each cell contributes about 2.1V to the 12.6 volt total).

If the battery is gone and you install a new one, I would re-do these voltage checks and make sure that something on the car is not pulling a big load on the new battery, though most likely, the problem will be with the old battery itself.

Post mortem showed battery was completely dry, Im wondering that maybe my battery tender did not shut down when fully charged and cooked it

I swear by my Odyssey pc925. Going on 8 years now in my '03. Its always hooked to a tender when in garage--never a problem. Also have them in other cars with no probs. It is a dry cell battery and can be mounted on side if need be.
Only difficulty is they are a little pricey and you have to fabricate a surround to secure it in stock gen 3 or 4 battery tray as it is way smaller and way lighter than stock. Just my experience.

Since the poster is from the UK, where the electricl current probably differes from my US-Centered knowledge, there may be a similiar device in UK...................

"Battery Tender" is often used as a synonym for ANY low-voltage trickle-charger device that charges a battery.... Not All Created Equal!...............A "Deltran Battery Tender Plus" (or Jr.) is a fully automatic device that CANNOT cause harm if reversed. It even has flashing-light codes to tell you of any problems. It CANNOT boil a battery...and in fact would shut down before overheating a leaking-bad-cracked-battery.

The key is to buy a "Fully Automatic" or "Fully Floating" charge device suited to your local voltages to avoid the scenario above.

And the long-length-leads from battery to starter, and the alram and BCM drains are ******* BATTERIES..... Low, old, but functioning batteries disguise a LOT of runability issues...... "Think battery" in both car and key fob every 4 years.

if its a pop top(where you can pop the covers and add water) they will use acid... you have to check them 2 times per year or more... (add distilled water only) - this is normal
