snakeyes,
The EXIDE Group 78 [730 cca][DC PT# 4709386] battery works great for most driving situations.
If you do alot of track time the Optima is the way to go.

I use the Optima series, mounted sideways.

I've logged about 9,000 miles with this set-up, including some hard driving at Sears Point. I also have a lot of electronics to run (DVD, Stereo, Rear Wide-Angle Camera, etc.) at car shows, for up to 6 hours.

I've never hard a problem with it. At least it works for me. You can see this battery at "www.ViperProject.com", "engine" section. They sell this battery almost everywhere...

I tried the Optima 73 35 just 2 weeks ago, but it would NOT fit. The useless top posts hit the frame, and you CANNOT cut them off without ruining the battery. Optima needs to make a battery without the top posts, but right now they do not.

On many cars, the Optima will not fit properly and requires bending the tray down and some modifications.

We also have used Odyssey batteries that are much smaller and lighter. It is a completely sealed dry cell battery. They work well. Mounting requires some modifications. If there is enough interest, we were thinking of making a mounting kit for the Viper.

Optima batteries are made here in Denver. At one time they said they were going to make a group 78 battery without the top posts. My most recent phone call to them about 2 months ago, indicated that nothing has progressed in this direction. It seems that the volume is not high enough to justify the tooling. The model 7535 does work in some Vipers and not in others. It depends on where the hand welded trey is located, which can vary considerably. You just have to try it to see if you are lucky and can use it. Mine worked fine with no modifications, but others have posted that the frame interfered with the top posts.

Here it is mounted in the car with the terminals disconnected. You can see that the frame is very close to the top posts
