I remember there was some discussion a few years ago on the best oil filter. Can someone remind me which ones were the top 3? Also where's the best source for K&Ns? Thanks

Intake filters, try S&B's from Roe Racing. They fit better. As for oil filters, NAPA Gold is high on the list as is the K&N oil filter. Mopar filter is also a good choice. Do not use Fram filters for a number of reasons (media colapses, no back flow preventer, etc).

More info to follow - but pull NAPA Gold off the list....

We've seen gasket failures on Mobil 1's, which is why we swithced to NAPA GOld - and now have seen a suspected gasket failure on this filter.

We're back in the hunt for the best oil filter - thinking about trying K&Ns....

Lifted from another board I frequent, below you'll find the cold oil pressure drops of various filters. Hot oil tests are pending.

One thing to consider is that the less pressure drop, the more flow and perhaps less filtering efficiency. What's the right balance of flow versus effeciency? I don't know. Is K&N better than Mobil 1? At flow perhaps but at filtering, perhaps not.

Brand: Pre-filter pressure, post-filter pressure, % drop

Amsoil: 40 vs 34 = -15%
Mobil 1: 40 vs 30 = -25%
K&N: 42 vs 36 = -14.5%
Fram: 40 vs 38 = -9.5%
Bosch: 40 vs 30 = -25%
Napa Silver: 38 vs 32 = -15.7%
Fram TG: 40 vs 22 = -30%
Napa Gold: 40 vs 32 = -20%
Pure1 40 vs 28 = -30%
Purolator+ : 40 vs 32 = -20%
Motorcraft: 40 vs 24 = -40%
STP: 40 vs 34 = -15%

You can follow the story here. They accept PayPal donations to fund the research.... See the home page.

It would be interesting to see the documentation that supports the various recommendations.

From what I can find, marketing has significantly more impact in filter preference and selection versus actual documented test results.

I used to worry about finding the best possible filter but I figure these days -

"If the Mopar filter is what they felt secure in installing on these cars at the factory, it can't **** that much."

But then again, I've read neither positive or negative things about the Mopar filter.

I would say the same for the lubricants. I don't think Mobil 1 got their sticker on the oil cap for nothing---although it's not on mine.

Steve;

I agree on the oil marketing influence also. What conteracts that somewhat is the ease of verifing the oil's value via post use oil analysis. There you can actually see the amount of wear metals in the oil and compare which is better for your particular engine and driving style. Unfortunately it's much more difficult to find valid filter tests.

For what it's worth Mobil 1 supersyn tests very well, so while marketing money is why Mobil's on the cap, it's also a good product. In addition, virtually any rated oil and filter performs satisfactorily. It's weirdo's like me that strive to get that last .01%.

Ron,

I see your point on the filter tests--well taken.

I have never said Mobil 1 wasn't a good oil--just that there may be better--as indicated by the analysis thread a little while ago.

In addition, virtually any rated oil and filter performs satisfactorily.

I believe this to be true as well. I think our resident expert, Tom, would agree that most engine failure is not due to inadequate lubrication in a properly maintainanced vehicle

Well I guess I'll stick with the Mopar filter for now, seems there's a difference of opinion. As far as Mobil 1's performance, I remember when I first added it to my 94 Viper.. it wasn't until a day or two later that I took the car out, and I couldn't understand why the car was revving easier..then I remembered I had switched to the Mobil 1 (!). That car went (by the way) from high 12.30s to 12.16/12.12 in back to back runs just by adding an exhaust balance tube..not too bad for a few dollars investment.

Mobil 1 is the supplier of the mopar filter. I read this a bit ago and will try and find the source article.

Update:The source was a distributer of mopar parts, the guy sells the filters by the case lot and stated the manufacturer of the filters is Mobile 1, so they are one in the same minus the labeling.

The Mopar Performance filter (P/N P5007550) is a Mobil One M1-204. It even has a picture of a GTS-R on the box. The stock Mopar filter (sorry, don't have the part number) is a different filter.
