I am driving out to VOI 11 and was wondering what the best route there might be.
When I do a map on Google the I-70 route is listed as 10 miles shorter distance than I-80, but about 40 minutes longer drive time.
I have heard that folks think I80 is a faster route and Google says so.
I-80 pros
Faster because there are less turns and mountains.
Supposedly less likely to get a ticket. Source
cons
Boring, with a capital B
I-80 I think is under construction for many miles.
Many, many big trucks.
Not many places to stop for gas and food.
I-70
Pros
Drive through the mountains can be very pretty in the fall.
Scenic
A whole 10 miles less distance.
Many places to stop if needed, well until you hit Utah.
Cons
Driving through the mountains can be dicey if the weather is bad.
Known speed traps. (Not much of an issue if their known right?, ie Tunnel to Breck, and Vail to Minturn)
I guess what I should do is drive there on I-70 and come back on I-80 and then I would know. That is if I ever want to drive to SLC again.
I could also go with a group if anyone else is driving out on Thursday the 30th and going straight through. It would be a big plus going either way to be with company.
