My $.02...
I think smoked taillights can work on certain cars...cars with a color palette that compliment the black. For example, I think a silver car, a black car, a white car or a graphite car can rock the tinted taillights. A Gen. I might be able to pull that off because of all of the black already on the car (sidepipes, windshield surround, door pillars, tires, etc.).
The taillights worked on your Z because it was orange, and orange and black don't clash. But when you throw black on a blue/white car, I think it's going to clash and look cheap. I've seen the tinted taillights on lots of black cars (the GTS I saw looked like evil incarnate!) but on a blue/white, not so much.
I'm not someone that says don't modify and customize your car, but the original GTS is a classic in all senses of the word, and a change that drastic would only take away from that.
In the end, it's your car and if you're happy with it, then who cares what anyone else thinks? We're not making the payments on it, so if tinting those taillights will make your dream car even dreamier, then tint away!
(...and welcome, BTW!)
