Borla catback

Just installed a Borla catback system on my 08 Viper with 15,000 miles.It is not only quieter than my stock system it is significantly more quiet. Is there a breakend period for the system?

Had a shop for 40 years and installed many Borla systems, all were very quiet, but they do seem to have a kind of break in period, when the system drys out from the heat and all the lubricants used for packaging and storage clears out. Will it get louder, maybe a little. Borla makes different levels of systems some louder than others, I think they make only one system for the Viper. One good thing I see you live in CA everyone will think your driving a electric car and be very happy with you.

My car had the Borla setup on it when I bought it. It was certainly louder than my dad's stock 03 he had for a while, but my car has a pile of miles on it, so if there is any break-in mine would have done it. I believe they made both a 2.5" and 3" version. I have the smaller one. It gives it a lot lower tone to my ear at least, so even if it wasn't super loud I liked it more than the racier sounding exhausts.

If I were to describe what it sounds like now, it is smoother, lower pitch, and much quieter. After reading so many complaints about the Borla system being ridiculously loud, I was apprehensive to order their system. Right now it sounds more like a Cadillac than a Viper.

Did you read that the system was loud on a Viper or just in general , like I said they make some louder systems for other cars like the Attack system not sure how they spell it, I would contact Borla and see if they make a more aggressive muffler that you could swap out, and send back the one you have. If your like me I have never changed a muffler to make my car quieter, usually I put a straight pipe were the muffler was, same with the cat.

I just hijacked a post to give you their thoughts on the Borla system. The last two sentences are pretty much my thoughts from what I had read.

"I finally received my Borla exhaust, which as some of you may know, was a hassle in itself. Buy anyways, it arrived yesterday and I couldn't have been happier. I got right on the install and put it on late last night.

Some observations I had that maybe a few of you could shed some light on.

My pipes did not say Borla anywhere on them. However, they also didn't have the Chrysler logo like the 09 that I took off did. The tips where polished so that was obviously different than the 09. Just want to make sure I got a Borla exhaust.

The inside of the Borla had 4 smaller tubes running the length of the muffler. The 09 exhaust looked like straight pipe inside...

The Borla seems not much louder, if at all than the 09. It does sound a little more throaty though. Does this seem normal? I assumed from all the posts on this site that the Borla was extremely loud. Much louder than it was last night".

Any thoughts?

I have the old style Borla (I think the first version ever made for the Viper) and it is very noticeably louder than stock! I had it installed many years ago along with headers, Hennessy air box, smooth tubes and cat delete. Given the "lumpy' cam of the "96" it has a very throaty loping idle of and old muscle car. To me it is the best sounding Viper I have heard.
On the other hand my '06 SRT Coupe has the later version Borla "race exhaust" (also with no cats) and it sounds like a truck!

That system was developed for the Gen 3 car which had a rear crossover. On the Gen 4 cars its actually a little more restrictive than the stock system but
does not seem to hurt power. It has a deeper tone but is not loud at all. You need to keep an eye on the rear hangers, they sometimes crack.

I had a 2000 coupe with a Borla cat back exhaust. I thought it was absolutely perfect. Went out and picked up the Borla exhaust for my 2008 figuring it would be just as nice. Total disappointment. I wish I would have chatted with you guys before my purchase. For now it is on to stay. It is not a bad system just not aggressive enough, I was hoping to make a little noise.

I have also heard a 2005 with the full flow catalytic converters and stock exhaust.
Sounded really nice.

I also put a Borla cat back on my 08 with 15,000 miles.
It ***** for the same reasons. Had it on my 2000 GTS and it was great! They changed something. $1200 out the window.
